Time Allowed: : 3 hours

General Instructions:

1. There are 33 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.


2. This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E.
3. All the sections are compulsory.
4. Section A contains sixteen questions, twelve MCQ and four Assertion Reasoning based of 1 mark each, Section B contains
five questions of two marks each, Section C contains seven questions of three marks each, Section D contains two case
study based questions of four marks each and Section E contains three long answer questions of five marks each.
5. There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question in Section B, one question in
Section C, one question in each CBQ in Section D and all three questions in Section E. You have to attempt only one of the
choices in such questions.
6. Use of calculators is not allowed.

20. Calculate the period of revolution of an electron revolving in the first orbit of the hydrogen atom. Given the radius of the
first orbit = 0.53Ȧ and c = 3 × 10 8 ms − 1
21. A stream of protons is moving parallel to a stream of electrons. Do the two streams tend to come closer or move apart?

A charge 'cf moving along the X-axis with a velocity v is subjected to a uniform magnetic field B acting along the Z-axis
as it crosses the origin O.
i. Trace its trajectory
ii. Does the charge gain kinetic energy as it enters the magnetic field? Justify your answer.

22. Prove that the current density of a metallic conductor is directly proportional to the drift speed of electrons.
23. Explain the formation of depletion layer and barrier potential in a p-n junction diode.
24. A metal has a work function of 2.0 eV and is illuminated by monochromatic light of wavelength 500 nm. Calculate
i. the threshold wavelength.
ii. the maximum energy of photoelectrons.
iii. the stopping potential.
25. i. Draw a plot showing the variation of potential energy of a pair of nucleons as a function of their separation. Mark the
regions where the nuclear force is

26. i. State Bohr's quantization condition for defining stationary orbits. How does de-Broglie hypothesis explain the

27. Give reasons for the following :


i. Astronomers prefer to use telescopes with large objective diameters to observe astronomical objects.
ii. Two identical but independent monochromatic sources of light cannot be coherent.
iii. The value of the Brewster angle for a transparent medium is different for lights of different colours.
28. i. Define mutual inductance.
ii. A pair of adjacent coils has a mutual inductance of 1.5 H. If the current in one coil changes from 0 to 20 A in 0.5 s,
what is the change of flux linkage with the other coil?

i. Define self-inductance. Write its SI unit.


ii. A long solenoid with 15 turns per cm has a small loop of area 2.0 cm2 placed inside the solenoid normal to its axis. If
the current carried by the solenoid changes steadily from 2.0 A to 4.0 A in 0.1 s, then what is the induced emf in the
loop while the current is changing?

29. Read the text carefully and answer the questions:
A stationary charge produces only an electrostatic field while a charge in uniform motion produces a magnetic field, that
does not change with time. An oscillating charge is an example of accelerating charge. It produces an oscillating
magnetic field, which in turn produces an oscillating electric fields and so on. The oscillating electric and magnetic fields
regenerate each other as a wave which propagates through space.

33. i. With the help of a diagram, explain the principle and working of a device which produces current that reverses its
direction after regular intervals of time.
ii. If a charged capacitor C is short-circuited through an inductor L, the charge and current in the circuit oscillate simple
harmonically.
a. In what form the capacitor and the inductor store energy?
b. Write two reasons due to which the oscillations become damped.

OR

Derive an expression for the impedance of a series LCR circuit connected to an ac supply of variable frequency.
Plot a graph showing the variation of current with the frequency of the applied voltage. Explain briefly how the
phenomenon of resonance in the circuit can be used in the tuning mechanism of a radio or a TV set.
