Problem 1:
A CSTR and a PFR of equal volume are connected in
series to carry out a first-order, isothermal, liquid-phase
reaction:
A → P.
The rate constant is 0.2 s−1 . The space-time is 5 s for
both the reactors. Determine the overall fractional con-
version of A.
Problem 3:
The liquid-phase reaction A → P is to be carried out
at constant temperature in a Continuous Stirred-Tank
Reactor (CSTR) followed by a Plug Flow Reactor (PFR)

in series. The overall conversion of A achieved by the
reactor system (CSTR + PFR) is 95%. The CSTR has
a volume of 75 liters. Pure A is fed to the CSTR at a
concentration CA0 = 2 mol/liter and a volumetric flow
rate of 4 liters/min. The kinetics of the reaction is given
by:
Problem 4:
A reaction A → B is to be conducted in two CSTRs
in series. The steady state conversion desired is Xf . The
reaction rate as a function of conversion is given by:
−1
rA =
1+X
If the feed contains no B, then find the conversion in
the first reactor that minimizes the total volume of the
two reactors.
Problem 5:
A pollutant P degrades according to first-order kinet-
ics. An aqueous stream containing P at a concentration
2
of 2 kmol/m3 and a volumetric flow rate of 1 m3 /h re-
quires a mixed flow reactor of volume V to bring down
the pollutant level to 0.5 kmol/m3 . The inlet concentra-
tion of the pollutant is now doubled, and the volumetric
flow rate is tripled. If the pollutant level is to be brought
down to the same level of 0.5 kmol/m3 , the volume of the
mixed flow reactor should be increased by a factor of?
Problem 6:
The following gas phase reaction is taking place in a
plug flow reactor:
1
A+ B →C
2
The stoichiometric mixture of A and B at 300 K is fed
to the reactor. At 1 m along the length of the reactor,
the temperature is 360 K. The pressure drop is negligible
and ideal gas behavior can be assumed. Find the expres-
sion relating the concentration of A at the inlet (CA0 ),
concentration of A at 1 m (CA ), and the corresponding
conversion of A (X).
