Summary of Required Skills in ALL Functions

1. Understand the equation of a function and sketch each graph: y  ax  q

2 𝒂
y  a(x p)  q y  q 𝒚 = 𝒂𝒃𝒙+𝒑 + 𝒒
𝒙+𝒑

2. Interpret a sketched graph in relation to its characteristics. Domain, Range , Increase

(f’(x) > 0), Decrease (f’(x) < 0), f’(x).f(x) > 0.
3. Applicable Transformation Geometry: f (-x);- f (x); f (x + a) ; f (x) + a; a.f (x)
4. Know how to determine parts of a relevant function: Asymptotes, Min/Max, Symmetry,
Turning point, etc.
5. Determine the equation of the provided function
6. Know the inverse of prescribed functions

LOW HANGING FRUITS

HYPERBOLA
Sketching a Hyperbola
Learners need to know that when sketching /drawing a hyperbola
 Shape is important
 Intercepts must be labelled
 Asymptotes (Horizontal & Vertical) must be indicated using dash lines and the
values where it intercepts the axis must be given.
 Include only the required information on the Cartesian Plane
Steps in sketching

Asymptotes
 Based on the equation of the function, the learner must show that the V sy is
given by: x = - p (not x = p) and Hasy y = q.
 When writing the equation of the asymptote don’t just writing of values i.e.2
& 3 should but it should be V sy x = 2 and Horizontal AsymptoteaHasy y = 3
They must be written as an equation.
