TOPIC: Long Division Involving
Polynomials Explore

Introduction

It aims to present the lesson in a concise (clear) and

CONTENT STANDARD: comprehensive (complete) manner. This lesson deals
The learner demonstrates with dividing polynomials in two ways: using the long
understanding of key concepts of division process patterned to the concepts of usual
sequences, polynomials, and dividing integers, and the other is by using synthetic
polynomial equations. division. The synthetic division is believed to be the
shortcut version of long division. The synthetic
division is still valuable and an alternative solution to
find the remainder and factor(s) of a polynomial.
Reinforcement activities on the next part are included
to assess your learning and to improve your skills in
dividing polynomials. In the end, you’ll find out that
mathematics is easy to learn and full of fun.

 Recapitulation of the previous topic.

 Performance task

Presentation/Discussion: In Grade 9, you learned about

quadratic equations.

Example of Quadratic Equation:

3 x −2 x +6=0

Quadratic Linear Constant

FIRM-UP
The goal of this section is to help students acquire key
concepts related to dividing polynomials. These
concepts will later be used to solve a variety of real-
life problems.

Definition 1: A POLYNOMIAL is an expression of

the form a n x n +a n−1 x n−1+ an−2 x n−2 +…+ a1 x + a0 , an ≠ 0 ,
where the nonnegative integer n is called the degree of
the polynomials and coefficients a 1 , a 0 , … , an are real
numbers.

Example of Polynomial Expression:

4 3 2
5 x −3 x +7 x + 2 x−7

NOTE:
1) The polynomial expression is in DECREASING
powers of.
2) The polynomial expression is in STANDARD
FORM.

REASONS WHY AN EXPRESSION IS A

POLYNOMIAL.
1) A polynomial expression should NOT have a
variable in the denominator.
 Identify which is a polynomial:

4) Variable(s) in a polynomial expression should NOT
have fractional exponents.

LESSON 1: DIVIDING POLYNOMIALS USING

LONG DIVISION

We divide polynomials the way we divide whole

numbers. When we divide whole numbers, we begin
by dividing the digits of the dividend that have the
greates place value by the divisor using the algorithm
divide-multiply-subtract-bring down the digit in the
next place value position, and repeat the process.
 Give example

Steps in dividing polynomial by another polynomial:

1. Arrange the terms of dividend and divisor in
descending order.
2. Divide the first term of the dividend by the first term
of the divisor to obtain the first term of the answer
(quotient). 3. Multiply the first term of the quotient to
the first term of the divisor.
4. Subtract the product from the dividend. Bring down
the next term.
5. Repeat the Steps 2, 3 & 4 until there is nothing left
in the dividend to be brought down.
R(x )
6. Write your answer as , Q(x )+ , where
D(x )
R(x)=Remainder, D(x)=Divisor, Q(x)=Quotient
Example 1.
Divide 3 x 2+ 2 x +4 by x +2
3 x−4
x +2 √ 3 x + 2 x + 4
2

− ( 3 x 2+ 6 x )
−4 x+ 4
−(4 x−8)
12
Divide the leading terms: 3 x 2 ÷ x=3 x
Multiply the quotient by the divisor:
2
3 x ( x +2 )=3 x +6 x
Subtract: ( 3 x 2+ 2 x ) −( 3 x2 +6 x ) =−4 x
Bring down +4; Divide the leading terms:
−4 x ÷ x=−4
Multiply the quotient by the divisor:
−4 ( x+ 2 )=−4 x−8
Subtract ( 4 x+ 4 )−(−4 x−8 )=12
2
3 x +2 x+ 4 12
Answer: =3 x−4+
x +2 x +12

Check: 3 x 2+ 2 x +4=( x +2 ) ( 3 x−4 ) +12

¿(3 x ¿¿ 2+6 x−4 x−8)+12 ¿
2
¿ 3 x +2 x +4 True

Example 2.
Divide 4 x 2−3 by 2 x+ 1
 Student will answer on the board.
2 x−1
x +2 √ 4 x 2+ 0 x −3
− ( 4 x 2+ 2 x )
−2 x−3
−(−2 x−1)
-2
2
Divide: 4 x ÷ 2 x=2 x
Multiply: 2 x ( 2 x+ 1 )=4 x2 +2 x
Subtract: ( 4 x 2+ 0 x ) −( 4 x2 +2 x )=−2 x
Bring down -3; Divide: −2 x ÷ 2 x=−1
Multiply:−1 ( 2 x +1 )=−2 x−1
Subtract: (−2 x−3 )− (−2 x−1 )=−2
2
4 x −3 2
Answer: =2 x−1+
2 x +1 2 x +1

Example 3.
Divide 6 x 3−15 x−5 by 3 x +6
 Student will answer on the board.
2 x−1
3 x+ 6 √ 6 x 3 +0 x 2−15 x−5
−( 6 x 3 +12 x 2 )
2
−12 x −15 x
2
−(−12 x −24 x )
9 x−5
−( 9 x +18 )
-23

Divide: 6 x 3 ÷ 3 x=2 x 2
Multiply: 2 x 2 ( 3 x+ 6 )=6 x 3 +1 2 x 2
Subtract: ( 6 x 3 +0 x 2 )−( 6 x 2 +1 2 x 2 )=−1 2 x 2
Bring down -15x;
Repeat the process.
3
6 x −15 x −5 2 23
Answer: =2 x −4 x +3−
3 x +6 3 x+ 6
