CANADA DAY
Canada Day is on 1 July. Every year on this day, Canadians celebrate the start of their country in 1867.
There are celebrations in every town and city in Canada. It’s a holiday, so people don’t work on Canada
Day, and students don’t go to school.
The day usually starts with a big breakfast. Later there are parades and dancing in the streets. A lot of
people play sports on this day, too. In the evening, people don’t usually have dinner in their houses – they
have a barbecue in their gardens. At night some people go out to city squares or parks to watch fireworks
or listen to music.
Canada Day is an enormous celebration of Canadian history and culture. A lot of people call it ‘Canada’s
birthday’. Like a birthday party, Canada Day is usually noisy – but it’s also a lot of fun!

Elephants are the biggest land animals in the world. (The biggest animals are blue whales, but they
live in the sea.) There are elephants in Africa and Asia. The two types of elephants are different – Asian
elephants are usually smaller than African ones.
Elephants don’t eat other animals. They eat small trees, grass and other plants. But they are heavy –
they can grow to about 7,000 kilos – so they can be very dangerous to people.
Elephants are intelligent. Like people, they live in family groups. In some countries people use
elephants for work – they are very strong, and they can move heavy objects.
But in many places elephants are in danger. One of the worst problems for elephants is hunting. Some
people kill elephants because they want the animal’s tusks (its two long teeth). To protect elephants, we
need to create safe areas for them.

Lisa: My favourite place is Brighton. It’s a small city – it’s smaller than London – but there are a lot of
exciting places for young people. A lot of students live in the city. It’s very friendly. There’s a nice
beach, too, and it’s only five minutes on foot from the city centre.
Bob: Glasgow, in Scotland, is my favourite place. Edinburgh is prettier than Glasgow, and it’s more
popular with tourists, but I think Glasgow is more interesting. There are some fantastic modern
buildings in
Glasgow. There aren’t any beaches, but there are some nice parks. There are also a lot of nice
restaurants and cafés.
Karen: Cardiff is my favourite city. It’s the capital city of Wales. There’s a beautiful castle in the city
centre. Parts of the castle are more than 800 years old! Cardiff is a great place for music – some great
bands and singers come from Cardiff. There are a lot of good theatres there, too.
1. Why is Brighton a good city for young people?
