ASSIGNMENT-IV

PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS (MA2L004) B. Tech. (4th Semester)

INSTRUCTIONS: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Q1. Solve the following partial differential equations by the method of separation of variables.
∂z
(a) 4 ∂x + ∂z
∂y
= 3z subject to z = e−5y when x = 0.
∂2z ∂z ∂z
(b) ∂x2
− 2 ∂x + ∂y
= 0.
∂2u ∂u
(c) ∂x2
− ∂t
= u subject to u(0, t) = u(π, t) = 0.

Q2. Classify the following partial differential equations:

(a) uxx + 4uxy + (x2 + 4y 2 )uyy = sin(x + y).

(b) (x + 1)uxx − 2(x + 2)uxy + (x + 3)uyy = 0.
(c) xfxx + yfyy = 0, x > 0, y > 0.
(d) uxx + 4uxy + 4uyy − 12ux + uy + 7u = x2 + y 2 .
(e) (1 + x2 )fxx + (5 + 2x2 )fxy + (4 + x2 )fyy = 2 sin(x + y).

Q3. A string is stretched between two fixed points at a distance 2l apart and the points of the string are
given initial velocities v where
(
cx/l for 0 < x < l,
v=
(c/l)(2l − x) for l < x < 2l,

x being the distance from an end point. Find the displacement of the string at any subsequent time.

Q4. If a string of length of length l is initially at rest in equilibrium position and each point of it is given
the velocity
∂y πx
= v0 sin3 , 0 < x < l.
∂t t=0 l
Determine the transverse displacement y(x, t).

Q5. A string is stretched and fastened to two points l apart. Motion is started by displacing the string into
the form y = k(lx − x2 ) from which it is released at time t = 0. Find the displacement of any point of
the string at a distance x from one end at any time t.

Q6. A taut string of length 2l is fastened at both ends. The mid point of the string is taken to a height b
and then released from the rest in that position. Find the displacement of the string.
Q7. Solve the problem of the vibrating string for the following boundary conditions.

(i) y(0, t) = y(l, t) = 0,

∂y
(ii) ∂t
(x, 0) = x(x − l), 0 ≤ x ≤ l,
(iii) (
x for 0 ≤ x ≤ l/2,
y(x, 0) =
l−x for l/2 < x ≤ l.

Q8. A uniform string of density ρ is stretched to tension ρc2 and executes a small transverse vibration in a
plane through the undisturbed line of the string. The ends x = 0, l of the string are fixed. The string
is released from rest in the position y = (4ϵ/l)x(l − x). Show that the motion is given by

32ϵ X 1 (2n + 1)πx (2n + 1)πct
y= 3
sin cos .
3 n=0 (2n + 1) l l

Q9. Solve the following heat equation

∂u ∂ 2u
= α2 2
∂t ∂x
subject to the conditions:

(i) u(x, t) is bounded as t → ∞,

(ii) u = 0 for x = 0 and x = π for all t ≥ 0,
(iii) u(x, 0) = πx − x2 , 0 < x < π.

Q10. Solve the following heat equation

∂θ ∂ 2θ
=
∂t ∂x2
for t > 0 and 0 < x < 1, θ being the temperature. The initial and boundary conditions are

(i) θ(0, t) = 0, t > 0,

∂θ
(ii) ∂x
(x, t) = 0 at x = 1, t > 0,
(iii) θ(x, 0) = x, 0 < x < 1.

Q11. A uniform rod of length l whose surface is thermally insulated is initially at a constant temperature
θ = θ0 . At time t = 0, one end is suddenly cooled to zero temperature while the other end remains
thermally insulated. This state is maintained subsequently. Find the temperature at the end x = l.

Q12. An insulated rod of length l has its end A and B kept at a degree centigrade and b degree centigrade
until steady state conditions prevail. The temperature at each end in suddenly reduced to zero degree
centigrade and kept so. Find the resulting temperature at any point of the rod taking the end A as
origin.
