1. Explain the electric field lines and the magnitude of electric field.
2. What is parallel plate capacitor ? Obtain the formula for the capacitance of such a parallel plate
capacitor and on which factors does the value of capacitance depend ?
3. A battery of emf 10 V and internal resistance 3 ú is connected to a resistor. If the current in the
circuit is 0.5 A, what is the resistance of the resistor ? What is the terminal voltage of the battery when
the circuit is closed ?
4. Obtain equation for force between two parallel currents carrying wire.
5. A closely wound solenoid of 2000 turns and area of cross-section 1.6 f 10–4 m2, carrying a current
of 4.0 A, is suspended through its centre allowing it to turn in a horizontal plane.
(a) What is the magnetic moment associated with the solenoid ?
(b) What is the force and torque on the solenoid if a uniform horizontal magnetic field of
7.5 f 10–2 T is set up at an angle of 30° with the axis of the solenoid ?
6. Consider a metal ring kept on top of a fixed solenoid (say on a cardboard) as per figure. The centre
of the ring coincides with the axis of the solenoid. If the current is suddenly switched on, the metal
ring jumps up. Explain.

14. A uniformly charged conducting sphere of 2.4 m diameter has a surface charge density of 80.0 mC/m2.
(a) Find the charge on the sphere.
(b) What is the total electric flux leaving the surface of the sphere ?
15. What is Wheatstone bridge ? Explain its principle.
16. A short bar magnet placed with its axis at 30° with a uniform external magnetic field of 0.25 T
experiences a torque of magnitude equal to 4.5 ´ 10–2 J. What is the magnitude of magnetic moment
of the magnet ?
17. Derive equation of induced emf in the rod which is sliding on two sides of U shaped frame placed
perpendicular to magnetic field.
18. A charged 30 mF capacitor is connected to a 27 mH inductor. What is the angular frequency of free
oscillations of the circuit ?

21. Monochromatic light of frequency 6.0 ´ 1014 Hz is produced by a laser. The power emitted is
2.0 ´ 10–3 W. (a) What is the energy of a photon in the light beam ? (b) How many photons per second,
on an average, are emitted by the source ?

23. Explain the process of thermonuclear fusion as a source of energy in the Sun and stars.

27. A long solenoid with 15 turns per cm has a small loop of area 2.0 cm 2 placed inside the solenoid
normal to its axis. If the current carried by the solenoid changes steadily from 2.0 A to 4.0 A in 0.1 s,
what is the induced emf in the loop while the current is changing ?
28. A horizontal straight wire 10 m long extending from east to west is falling with a speed of
5.0 m s –1 , at right angles to the horizontal component of the earth’s magnetic field, 0.30 f

31. A given coin has a mass of 3.0 g. Calculate the nuclear energy that would be required to separate
all the neutrons and protons from each other. For simplicity assume that the coin is entirely made

29 Cu atoms (of mass 62.92960 u).
32. Answer the following questions :
(a) Are the equations of nuclear reactions (such as those given in Section 13.7) ‘balanced’ in the sense
a chemical equation (e.g., 2H 2 + O2 ® 2 H2O) is ? If not, in what sense are they balanced on both
sides ?
(b) If both the number of protons and the number of neutrons are conserved in each nuclear
reaction, in what way is mass converted into energy (or vice-versa) in a nuclear reaction ?
33. Explain the crystalline structure by writing the electronic configuration of elementary
semiconductors.

index of air-water = 1.33, refractive index for air-glass = 1.5.)
40. Explain refraction of plane wave from rarer to denser medium by using Huygen’s principle.
41. Explain effect of potential on photoelectric current in experiment of photoelectric effect.
42. In a Geiger-Marsden experiment, what is the distance of closest approach to the nucleus of a 7.7 MeV
a-particle before it comes momentarily to rest and reverses its direction ?

43. (a) Estimate the average drift speed of conduction electrons in a copper wire of cross-sectional
area 1.0 f 10–7 m 2 carrying a current of 1.5 A. Assume that each copper atom contributes
roughly one conduction electron. The density of copper is 9.0 f 103 kg/m3 and its atomic mass
is 63.5 u.
(b) Compare the drift speed obtained above with, (i) thermal speeds of copper atoms at ordinary
temperatures, (ii) speed of propagation of electric field along the conductor which causes the
drift motion.
44. Give characteristics of electric field lines.
45. A 100 ú resistor is connected to a 220 V, 50 Hz ac supply.
(a) What is the rms value of current in the circuit ?
(b) What is the net power consumed over a full cycle ?

47. Use the mirror equation to deduce that:
(a) an object placed between f and 2f of a concave mirror produces a real image beyond 2f.
(b) a convex mirror always produces a virtual image independent of the location of the object.
(c) the virtual image produced by a convex mirror is always diminished in size and is located
between the focus and the pole.
(d) an object placed between the pole and focus of a concave mirror produces a virtual and enlarged
image.
