Computer Hardware

The document provides an overview of a motherboard's role in connecting computer components, including the CPU's connection via a ZIF socket. It discusses CPU functionality, overclocking risks, and the differences between speed and throughput. Additionally, it covers various bus types for data transfer, external connections like USB and SATA, and mentions secondary storage options such as HDD, SSD, and cloud storage.

MOTHERBOARD

 Connects all components to each other

 Has slots( for internal component connection) and ports(external component
connection)

CPU connects to the M/B (motherboard) using a slot called the ZIF socket.

CPU – has system clock (timing and speed of all the computer functions)
 Frequency per second -> measured in Hertz. Eg MHz, 2.4GHz
Overclocking – when you run the speed to a faster level than it was designed to
 Overclocking drawbacks: components at a higher risk of wearing out quickly,
overheating, consumption of power is higher
 Overclocking can be done as
o Overclocking per component – CPU operates faster than the system clock
o Overclocking the whole system – the system clock speed is increased hence
affecting all components
 Speed vs throughput
o Speed is the maximum transfer speed
o Throughput is the actual transfer speed

 The bus - a communication system that transfers data between components in a

computer
Front Side Bus – connects CPU to RAM
Read about the Data bus, Address bus and Control

External Buses
USB - standardized connection
SATA – connects your storage device (SSD or HDD)
PCI Express – fast bus and connects fast devices such as NVMe

Secondary Storage
- HDD and SSD
- Cloud Storage
