1. What is something you do every day? We breathe air and drink water every day.
2. What major organ in your body makes up the respiratory system? Your lungs.
3. Where are your lungs located? Your lungs are located on each side of your heart in your
chest cavity.
4. What muscle is located beneath the lungs? The diaphragm
5. What part of your skeleton protects your lungs? Your ribcage
6. Draw a labelled diagram of the lung below

Part Function & description


Trachea It is a stiff, flexible tube it provides a reliable pathway for oxygen to enter your
body.
Bronchi It carries air in and out of your lungs.

Bronchus It carries air in and out of your lungs. It is an extension of the trachea and serve
as the central passageway into your lungs.
Bronchioles Carry air to small sacs in your lungs called alveoli.

Alveoli They expand during inhalation, taking in oxygen, and shrink during exhalation,
expelling carbon dioxide. It is where the gas exchange takes place.
Capillary It transports bloods, nutrients and oxygen cells in your organ and body systems.
8. What happens to your diaphragm as you breathe in? your diaphragm contracts and moves
down.
9. Why does it do this? This increases the space in your chest cavity.
10. What happens to your ribs as you breathe in? It goes upward and outward.
11. Draw a flow diagram of what happens to a particle of air which you breathe in (it has been
started for you)

during the process of breathing in and breathing out.

14. Explain how you use your larynx to talk? Your vocal cords vibrate to make sound.
15. Why do you burp? Swallowing excess air
16. What causes you to have the hiccups? Eating a large meal, drinking alcoholic or carbonated
beverages, getting excited suddenly, when your diaphragm expands and contracts
involuntarily.
17. Name one bad thing you can do to your lungs Smoke.
18. How can you keep your lungs healthy? Breathe deeply, don’t smoke, exercise, avoid
pollution and stay hydrated.
