Custom Vocal Arrangement and Mixing Exercise:

Goal:
To arrange a vocal section that includes lead vocals, doubles, harmonies, gang vocals, and
ad-libs, and then mix them to create a cohesive and engaging soundscape.

Materials Needed:
○ A recorded lead vocal track
○ Recording equipment for additional vocals (microphone, preamp, headphones)
○ A digital audio workstation (DAW) with mixing capabilities
○ Basic mixing plugins (EQ, compression, reverb, delay, etc.)

Steps:
1. Recording Preparation:
○ Set up your recording session with a new track for each type of vocal you plan
to record (double, harmony, gang vocal, ad-lib).
○ Use a pop filter and set levels to prevent clipping.
2. Recording Additional Vocals:
○ Record a double of the lead vocal, aiming for a tight performance that closely
matches the original.
○ Lay down harmony parts that complement the lead melody. Be mindful of the
intervals and how they fit within the chord structure.
○ For gang vocals, gather several people (or record yourself multiple times) to
shout or sing a particular line for an anthemic effect.
○ Add ad-libs, which are improvised decorative vocal phrases, typically found in
the verses or at the end of the song.
3. Initial Mix Balancing:
○ Balance the levels of each type of vocal relative to the lead vocal. Start with the
lead at a comfortable listening level and then blend the others around it.
○ Pan doubles slightly off-center, harmonies to wider positions, and ad-libs where
they complement the lead without distracting.
○ Group gang vocals and pan them to achieve a wide, surrounding effect.
4. Dynamics and EQ Processing:
○ Apply compression to even out the dynamics, particularly on the lead and
double tracks.
○ Use EQ to carve a space for each vocal type. Remove unnecessary low
frequencies from harmonies, ad-libs, and gang vocals to avoid muddying the
mix.
5. Spatial Effects:
○ Add reverb to create a sense of space, with varying amounts for each vocal type
to create depth. More reverb on harmonies and less on the lead can work well.
○ Use delay judiciously on ad-libs to make them stand out.
6. Tonal Blending:
○ If necessary, fine-tune the pitch of any dissonant harmonies or doubles using
pitch correction software to ensure blending.
7. Automation for Emphasis:
○ Use automation to highlight certain phrases or words. Increase the volume on a
powerful ad-lib or dynamically bring in harmonies during a chorus.
8. Final Touches:
○ Sit back and listen to the mix in context with the instrumental. Make any final
balance or effect tweaks to ensure everything sits well together.
9. Peer Review:
○ Once you’re satisfied, have someone else listen to your mix and provide
feedback. Fresh ears can often catch things you’ve missed.
10. Reflection and Repetition:
○ Take notes on what worked and what didn't, and why. Reflect on how different choices
in panning, effects, and levels impacted the final mix.
○ Repeat the exercise with different songs or sections to refine your skills further.

Remember, the goal is to create an arrangement where all vocal elements complement each
other and the lead vocal remains clear and central. Practice this exercise regularly with different
types of songs to become adept at arranging and mixing complex vocal sections.
