P4SCI 2.2

The document discusses the concepts of volume and pitch in sound. Volume is measured in decibels, with louder sounds resulting from larger vibrations, while pitch relates to the speed of vibrations, determining whether a sound is high or low. It also highlights that humans can hear a range of pitches, but some sounds produced by animals like elephants and bats are inaudible to us.

Unit 2: Sound

2.2: Volume and Pitch

Volume

 The volume of a sound is how loud or quiet it is.

 A sound is louder when the vibrations are bigger.
 A sound is quieter when the vibrations are smaller.
 A decibel (dB) is the unit we use to measure sound.
 The more decibels, the louder the sound is.
 A soft sound, like a whisper will measure around 15-20 decibels.
 A nail hit hard with a hammer will make a strong vibration, which means it
will make a loud sound.
 Very loud sounds (louder than 85dB) can damage our ears.

Measuring sound volume

 We can measure the volume of sound with a sound level meter.

 The meter measures the volume in decibels
 Pitch
 Pitch is a measure of how high or low something sounds and is related to the
speed of the vibrations that produce the sound.
 Different materials produce different pitches; if an object vibrates quickly we
hear a high-pitched sound, and if an object vibrates slowly we hear a low-
pitched sound.
 The sound an object makes changes depending on how fast it is vibrating.
 When an object vibrates quickly, high pitched sounds are heard.
 Low-pitched sounds come from things that vibrate more slowly.
 For example, a whistle makes a high-pitched sound.
 Thunder makes a low-pitched sound.
 Humans can hear sounds of different pitches, but there are sounds that they
cannot hear.
 Elephants use very low-pitched sounds that we cannot hear.
 Bats use very high-pitched sounds that we cannot hear.
