DC Lecture Notes

DC drives were commonly used for variable speed applications before AC drives were introduced. DC drives have the advantage of simple torque and speed control without sophisticated electronics, but have limitations such as being expensive, heavy, and requiring regular maintenance. AC drives have the advantage of using less expensive AC motors but more complex control units. Modern AC drives are now commonly used due to improvements in power electronics that allow efficient conversion of AC power to the variable voltage and frequency needed to control AC motor speed.

the load torque but also dynamic torque, ( Jde/dt ).
During deceleration, the dynamic torque, ( Jde/dt ), has
a negative sign. Therefore, it assists the motor
