Background
PivotTables is a common way to quickly analyze data with just a few
clicks

Example
Leveraging new account information of a bank to discover which day of the week generates the most deposits using pivot table

712 rows of new account data Pivot table of sum of amount broken down by day

PivotTables are highly flexible and can be quickly adjusted depending on how you
need to display your results

Background
Despite of its efficiency and simplicity, Pivot Tables (based on Excel Data
Sets) falls short when it comes to analyzing big data

Pivot Tables Limitations Descriptions

Excel data set is limited to the size of an Excel worksheet, about

1,048,000 rows.
Size 1 millions rows may seem a lot, but when you talk about databases, its
minismule. E.g. Its not uncommon that transaction data has million rows

When you have more than 100,000 rows, your performance slows
substantially.
Unable to do analysis of multiple data sources at the same time
Performance - Vlookup is needed to link multiple data sets from multiple different
sources
- Vlookup usage for large data sets can quickly become a problem
for performance

Standard Pivot Tables are deficient at creating new derived insights

from raw underlying data
Analytical Capabilities - Unable to do calculations within the pivot table and line up
comparative measures like Prior Year To Date.

Review and Proposed Solution: Benefits of Power Pivot
Power Pivot is a powerful solution with the capability to analyze vast
volumes of data without compromising on speed/performance
Pivot Tables (based on
Excel Data Sets) Power Pivot
Row limitations Row limitations
1 million rows capacity limit Removes virtually all limitations on a number of rows you can
analyze
Performance Performance
File becomes super slow and Excels automatic Process millions of rows in about the same time as thousands
calculations start to go a little berserk when Make the most of multi-core processors and gigabytes of memory for
handling more than 100,000 rows fastest processing of calculations

Analysis on Multiple Data Sources Analysis on Multiple Data Sources

Only allow the user to use a single source data table Data Model (single data source) containing multiple data sets from
Vlookup usage to bring the data into a single table can compromise multiple different sources can be built by relating data sets to one another
performance Able to analyze all data sets in one Pivot Table

Simplicity Simplicity
Create pivot table in a few easy clicks Power Pivot as Excel add-in takes advantage of familiar Excel tools and
features
Analytical Capabilities Analytical Capabilities
Must use Calculated Items and Calculated Fields to perform The new Data Analysis Expression (DAX) formula language that
calculations in the pivot table makes it easy to do calculations within the pivot table
