Linear Equations and Linear Functions
Linear Equations and Linear Functions
Example: Taxi fare from an airport to a nearby city is $1.25 per mile driven,
plus $0.75 for a bridge toll. Fare for 22 miles?
Let y represent the fare and x represent the number of miles driven on one
trip, then the linear equation is : y = 1.25x + 0.75
Example: Taxi fare from an airport to a nearby city is $0.8 per mile driven,
plus $2 for toll. Find the fare when the distance is 17 miles?
y = 0.80x + 2
Linear Equations and Functions
y = 1.25x + 0.75
When x = 1, y = 2; x = 5, y = 7
Linear functions
y = f(x) i.e., y equals f of x or y is a function of x.
Slope
It is calculated as:
Slope = Vertical Change (rise)/ Horizontal Change (run).
Slope of the line passing through two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) is:
m = (y2 - y1 )/( x2 - x1)
Linear Equations and Functions
Slope of the line joining point (2.5, -7) and (7.5, -3)?
MPC
= Change in consumption expenditure/ Change in disposable income
Interpretation of Both
Linear Equations and Functions
y = 1.25x + 0.75
Y = m x + c, where m = (y2 - y1 )/( x2 - x1)
Find the equation of the line with slope 0.75 and that passes
though the point (8, 10).
