Modelling and Simulation in Engineering

Computer modeling and simulation allows engineers to create software prototypes of objects to test how they would perform virtually. This reduces time and costs compared to building physical models. It allows testing thousands of configurations efficiently and finding potential issues. Some key advantages are reducing time spent on modeling by 80%, cutting costs dramatically, and improving engineering techniques through various simulation methods. Common simulation methods include CAD modeling, finite element analysis, and computational fluid dynamics.

What is Computer Modeling?
• Computer modeling is the concept of creating a
software prototype of the object that you want
to construct.
What is Simulation?
• Computer simulation is the concept of using a
software prototype of as real model and
exerting various external conditions on it
virtually to see how it would react in real life.
What are the Advantages of Computer
Modeling and Simulation?
• There are several advantages to using computer
modeling and simulation such as:

a) Reduction in time spent with the model

b) Reduction in spending with costs as you wont

need to build numerous real life models to test
various conjunctures

c) The ability to fins out any problems in the behavior

of your model efficiently and quickly.
Reduction in Time
• The time used to construct an actual working model
and the time used to construct a software
prototype differ vastly. Using a software modeling
process can save you as much as 80 percent in your
time.
Reduction in Cost
• Most companies don’t want to spend millions
of dollars for manufacturing and testing a
small part. Hence, computer modeling and
simulation can cut costs dramatically.
Reduction in Error
• Finding what is wrong with your model or your
part can be extremely easy by using a software
prototype and testing it under computerized
simulation conditions.
Better Engineering with Simulation
Techniques
• You can improve your engineering techniques
easily with various computer modeling and
simulation techniques.
Improved Efficiency and Better Testing

• Imagine as an engineer, that you have to

retest the same part with a thousand different
configurations. It would cost you thousands of
dollars as well as hours to accomplish.
• However, with computer modeling and
simulation, you can easily use a computer
software prototype to test it on thousands of
different conditions and combinations.
Optimization of Equipment with Simulation
and Modeling
So Do You Need a Real Model?
• Once you have constructed a software prototype of
your model and tested it under various conditions, you
can easily reconstruct a model that is suitable with
your latest simulation results. This will save you time
and money, while increasing your efficiency.
What Kinds of Computer Simulation
Methods are There?
• There are several different computer
simulation methods out there:
a) Computer Modeling with CAD Software
b) Structural Analysis with Finite Elements
Analysis Software
c) Computational Fluid Dynamics for Flow and
Heat Transfer Analysis
Computer Modeling with CAD Software
• There are many different computer software that
are used to model various parts.

• AutoCAD
• Solidworks
• CATIA
• AutoDesign
Structural Analysis with Finite Elements
Analysis Software
• Structural Analysis Software break down the structure to
small and finite elements for detailed structural analysis.
These include:

• NASTRAN
• PATRAN
• FEMLAB
Computational Fluid Dynamics for Flow and
Heat Transfer Analysis
• CFD Analysis is perhaps the most widely used
type of computer modeling and simulation
technique in the world. It is used to model
flow over objects.

• ANSYS / Fluent
• FEMLAB
• OpenFOAM
