Module 1

The document discusses mechatronics systems, which integrate mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering to create intelligent machines. It defines mechatronics and describes the key elements of a mechatronic system, including sensors that detect physical inputs and convert them to electrical signals, actuators that convert electrical signals to physical outputs, and microcontrollers that process signals and control the system. Examples are given of mechatronic systems like industrial robots that demonstrate the synergistic combination of mechanical and electronic components to create automated machines.

 Describe key elements of mechatronic
system
 Explain the principle and operation of
sensors and actuators
 Apply concepts of sensors and actuators for
an application
 Examine signal conditioning circuits
 Design a mechatronic system.

 Learning Outcomes
 Introduction to mechatronics
 Key Elements of Mechatronic System
 Examples of mechatronic systems
 Activity
 Assessment
 Define mechatronics
 Describe mechatronics key elements
 Identify mechatronics systems
 The term "mechatronics" was first assigned by Mr.
Tetsuro Mori, a senior engineer of the Japanese
company Yaskawa, in 1969.

 Mechatronics basically refers to mechanical

and electronic systems

 Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of

mechanical, electrical and electronics engineering,
computer science, and information technology,
which includes the use of control systems to design
products with built-in intelligence, more accuracy
and lower cost.

 A sensor is a device that measures a physical
quantity and converts it into a electrical signal

 Any Physical quantity electrical signal

Sensor

 Temperature sensors
 Displacement, position, motion and velocity sensors,
 Fluid sensors, liquid flow, liquid level
 Light sensors etc.,
 An actuator is a component of a machine that is
the drives the mechanism or system.
 Mechanical Actuation systems
◦ Gears,
◦ Belt and chain drives
◦ bearings etc.,
Mechanical switches
• limit switches
• switches

Relays
Solid-state switches,
 Diodes, transistors, thyristors
Solenoids
 Push something, Starter solenoid,
pneumatic or hydraulic valve
Drive systems
 DC., AC., or stepper motors
Microcontroller Block Diagram
 A best and well known example of mechatronics is the
industrial robot. In a robot, the body and other physical
parts are manufactured based on mechanical principles,
but the functioning and control of the robot is done by
electronic means.
 List out mechatronics systems.
 Identify the basic components used in the
system.
