Cladding System

The document discusses advanced cladding systems, outlining various cladding material options like metal panels, masonry, stone, precast concrete, rainscreen cladding and defines performance requirements for cladding including load transfer, thermal, sound, fire properties and aesthetics. Different cladding installation approaches are also covered such as stick systems, unitized curtain walling and panel installation.

cladding systems

Cladding

It is that part of the structure, which encloses the interior of the building.

It supports no structural loads but must be capable of supporting its own weight and
imposed environmental (wind/snow) loads across the height of a building.
A significant advantage that comes from releasing the
external wall from structural load carrying duties is the
freedom we can have in the selection of materials and the
flexibility that is available in terms of their application to a
framed structure.
What are the Performance Requirements of cladding?

• Load Transfer of external forces

• Thermal performance
• Sound insulation
• Air tightness
• Ventilation
• Fire safety
• Aesthetics
• Environmental credentials

What are the key shortcoming for using metal sheet (panel)
cladding?

One of the problems associated with the use of metal panel

systems is that they rarely include the related elements,
such as windows and doors, essential to complete the
building facade.

‘Total envelope’ packages = one stop shop

Such approach will reduce the likelihood of having problems arising from poor
communication particularly in relation to interface details.
Masonry Cladding

A system of support is installed to allow the masonry cladding to be supported from

the structural frame.

In addition to being tied back to a continuous background, the brickwork must be

tied back to the frame at regular intervals

moderate to severe
Stone Cladding

Cladding can be fabricated using granite, marbles,

slate, quartzite, limestone and sandstone. Stone
cladding follows the same general principles as
brickwork cladding.

Most designers have developed their own in-
house specification in a generic format but
tailored to meet the requirements of a specific
rainscreen cladding project.

2. Performance requirements
3. Discussion of the types of cladding
4. Approaches for the installation of cladding
Tutorial:
Your company will design and build a mix use tall structure within the capital
city of your country. The building is 50 storey high with 5 extra floors
underground. It is located within a highly populated dense area. Due to the
nature of the project, a range of different cladding materials will be installed.

Answer the following questions:

• What are the types of cladding available for you to use in this project?

• What are the performance criteria you would use to select an appropriate
cladding for a given part of this project?

• What are the 2 main approaches to the curtain walling you can use and
how would you chose an appropriate one?
