WHAT IS A
DATABASE?

• A database is a collection of
information organized to
provide efficient retrieval. The
collected information could be
in any number of formats
(electronic, printed, graphic,
audio, statistical, combinations).
These are physical (paper/print)
and electronic databases.

DATABASE?

• A database may or may not be

inside a computer. An office
filing cabinet full of letters,
memos, reports, and other
documents is a valuable
database. However, the term is
generally associated with
electronic data collections.

IN A DATABASE

• A database is a collection of
information that is organized so that it
can EASILY BE ACCESSED,
MANAGED, AND UPDATED. In one
view, databases can be classified
according to types of content:
bibliographic, full-text, numeric, and
images. (Rouse, 2016)
• Electronic Databases were first used in the
1960s
• 1970 – Dr. Edgar F. Codd published an
academic paper on relational databases.
• His paper inspired the creation of a language to

• The word “English” was later dropped and the
language was standardized to SQL or
Structure Query Language.
• SQL – giving the computer instructions on how
to handle large volumes of data.
• dBase – earliest widely used database product –
ran on old Apple Computers
• Databases used to be kept only in big machines
that filled entire rooms.
• Microsoft Access – one of the most commonly

• You can create a new
database from scratch
(Blank Database) or

• You can use pre-defined

templates by choosing first
a category or searching a

• For this lesson, we will be

creating our own database.

• A window will pop up asking for the
database name
• The resulting page will look pretty much
like a spreadsheet as shown on the 2nd

• The database name we have created
appears on the top of the page. Microsoft
Access is so user-friendly that it has
created the first spreadsheet as your first
table
• A database is a collection of related facts on
one subject. It can be separated into tables
that deal with specific data. The table
contains records that represent an instance
or row of a table. Records contain fields

object. Microsoft Access is a program that
lets us handle databases. It is part of the
