Methods of Solving (Elimination Method) : Linear Equations

This document provides an overview of solving systems of linear equations using the elimination method. It begins by reviewing what a linear equation and system of linear equations are. It then describes the three types of systems: independent, inconsistent, and dependent. The document focuses on the elimination method, which involves eliminating one variable by adding the equations in the system together. It provides examples of using elimination to solve independent systems by finding the values of each variable that satisfy both equations. Examples are also given for dependent and inconsistent systems.

Linear Equations
(Elimination
Method)
Review basic concepts about
linear equations.

Objectives:
Apply different methods in
solving systems of linear
equations in two variables.
Review:

••  A Linear Equation is an equation for a line.

• A System of Linear Equations is when we have two or more linear

equations working together.
Example:
Review:

• There are three types of systems of linear equations in two variables,

and three types of solutions.
1. An independent system has exactly one solution pair (x,y). The point where
the two lines intersect is the only solution.
2. An inconsistent system has no solution.
3. A dependent system has infinitely many solutions.
A solution to a system of equations is a value of x and a value of y that, when
substituted into the equations, satisfies both equations at the same time.

Lesson 1.3
Methods of Solving System of Linear Equations

After identifying that the system of linear equation

is consistent (referring to independent), we can
compute for the solution of the two intersecting
lines. There are different methods of solving the
solution of a linear equation involving two unknown
variables.
Solution will be determined using five methods
namely: elimination, substitution, equivalent
equation, Cramer’s rule and graphical.
Elimination Method
Elimination Method

Example: Solve the following system of linear equation using

elimination method.
1. 2x + y = 16
x + 2y = 11

2. 2x – y = 4
x – 3y = 7

3. 4x + y = -2
2x + y = 0
