Goals of Learning Process

The document discusses the goals of the learning process. It states that learners can create meaningful representations of knowledge over time with support. Goal setting is important as it directs students towards what they want to achieve and how to get there. Learning goals are the focus of a lesson and should specify what students will understand and be able to do as a result. They can help students and educators focus on the intended learning and evaluate progress. Bloom's Taxonomy outlines six levels of cognitive skills from lowest to highest order thinking. Effective goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based.

Goals of Learning

Process
Goals of Learning Process
• The successful learner, over time and with support and
instructional guidance, can create meaningful, coherent,
representation of knowledge

• The strategic nature of learning requires students to be goal

directed
Goal Setting
• Goal setting is the first of a set of self-regulatory
processes that students should undertake when
approaching a task.
• Goal setting is knowing how exactly what you want to
achieve, and then deciding how you are going to get
there.
Learning Goals
• Is the “backbone” of a lesson and provides the “reason” for teaching and
observing it.
• It should be stated in terms of what students will understand and what they
will be able to do as a result of the lesson
• It focusses on effort/progress and allows you and your students to focus on
what they are supposed to learning.
• It will also ensure you are evaluating the things you care about and designing
the course or activity to best meet your goals for students.
Learning Goals

• Initially, students’ short-term goals and learning may be

sketchy in an area, but overtime their understanding
can be refined by filling gaps, and deepening their
understanding of the subject matter so that the can
reach longer term goal.
Learning Goals

• Educators can assist learning in creating meaningful

learning goals that are consistent with both personal
and educational aspirations and interests.
Bloom’s Taxonomy
• There are 6 levels of cognitive skills (lowest to highest)
1. Knowledge/Remembering
2. Comprehension/Understanding
3. Application/Applying
4. Analysis/analyzing
5. Evaluation/evaluating
6. Synthesis/create
Bloom’s Taxonomy
Knowledge/Remembering Define, List, recognize

Comprehension/Understanding Characterize, describe, explain, identify, locate,

recognize, sort
Application/Applying Choose, demonstrate, implement, perform

Analysis/analyzing Analyze, categorize, compare,, differentiate

Evaluation/evaluating Assess, critique, evaluate, rank, rate

Synthesis/create Construct, design, formulate, organize, synthesis

Effective Goal are:

• Specific is it detailed enough??

• Measurable is there a way to evaluate progress??

• Achievable is it realistic??

• Relevant does the student have reasons to achieve it??

• Time-based When should it be done??
