Module 6 - Heat

This document discusses heat and temperature. It defines heat and temperature, and differentiates between the two at the molecular level. It explains how heat affects objects, causing thermal expansion and phase changes. The concept of specific heat capacity is introduced, which is the amount of heat required to change an object's temperature. The document provides examples of calculating heat using the formula Q=mcΔT, where Q is heat, m is mass, c is specific heat capacity, and ΔT is the change in temperature. Key differences between heat and temperature are outlined, such as heat being a transfer of energy while temperature is a measure of intensity or degree of hotness.

Let’s Learn

Specifically, after going through this hybrid module you are expected to:
1. define heat and temperature.
2. differentiate between heat and temperature at the molecular level.
3. explain the effects of heat on a body.
4. relate heat to mass and temperature through the concept of specific
heat capacity.
5. calculate the heat absorbed or released to raise or decrease the
temperature of a substance

How does Heat affect a body?
Thermal expansion
is the general increase in the volume of a material as its
temperature is increased.

Example: The sagging of power lines or telephone wires during

hot or summer days. Heat causes them to expand.
Opposite of which is how difficult to open a jar that was just
taken out of the refrigerator. What do you think is the best way to
open it?
How does Heat affect a body?
Phase change
is a change in the physical property of matter when heat is
absorbed or added and given off or extracted.
 Requires energy: melting, vaporization, and sublimation.

 Releases energy: Freezing, condensation, and deposition.

Specific heat capacity

• is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the

temperature of 1 kilogram of a substance by 1 kelvin (SI unit
of specific heat capacity J kg−1 K−1).

Heat absorption (addition) or extraction varies from

one material to another. This
property of matter is called specific heat capacity
(represented by c).
The amount of heat transfer is directly proportional to the mass
and temperature of the body. Which means the materials that
have greater mass and higher temperature will transfer more
heat at a fast rate. The amount of heat that would change the
temperature of a material is given by the expression Q=mcΔT.
Based on the formula, heat can be measured in terms of calorie
(cal), kilocalorie (kcal), British Thermal Unit (BTU) or in joules (J),
the SI unit or using calorimeter.

T1 = 30 °C Q = (1.50 Kg) (4186 J/Kg °C) (80 °C- 30 °C)
T2 = 80 °C Q = (1.50 Kg) (4186 J/Kg °C) (50°C)
c= 4186 J/Kg °C
