Tissue Level of Organization

Tissue is a group of cells that work together to perform specialized functions. There are four basic types of tissues: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous. Epithelial tissue covers surfaces and lines organs. Connective tissue binds and supports other tissues. Muscular tissue generates force through contraction of muscle fibers. Nervous tissue consists of neurons and neuroglia that conduct electrical signals.

OVERVIEW

 A tissue is a group of cells that usually have a common

origin in an embryo and function together to carry out
specialized activities
four basic types according to their
structure and function

Epithelial Connectiv Muscular Nervous

Tissue e Tissue Tissue Tissue
Cell Junctions
 Cell junctions are contact points between the plasma
membranes of tissue cells.
Epithelium Tissue
Classification of Epithelial Tissue
Connective Tissue

 It binds together, supports, and strengthens other

body tissues; protects and insulates internal organs;
compartmentalizes structures; serves as the major
transport system within the body; is the primary
location of stored energy reserves; and is the main
source of immune responses.

Muscular Tissue

 Muscular tissue consists of elongated cells called muscle

fibers or myocytes that can use ATP to generate force
 Based on location and certain structural and functional
features, muscular tissue is classified into three types:
skeletal, cardiac, and smooth
SKELETAL TISSUE
CARDIAC TISSUE
MUSCLE TISSUE
Nervous Tissue

 nervous tissue consists of only two

principal types of cells: neurons
and neuroglia
 Most neurons consist of three basic
parts: a cell body and two kinds of
cell processes— dendrites and
axons
