STRUCTURE OF THE
NAIL
The Nail is a horny protective covering of
the finger and toe. The technical term for the
nail is onyx. The Horny tissue formed at the
base of the protein substance is called
keratin. A normal nail should be firm,
Flexible, and pinkish.
PART OF THE NAIL
The Matrix is where the growth of the nail starts
just under the fold of the skin.
The Nail plate is the layer you see. The nail plate is
semitransparent allowing the color of the blood supply
of the dermis to show through.
The Nail bed the underlying flesh where the entire
nail plate is attached.
The Lanula is a light-colored crescent shaped
area at the base of the nail
The cuticle is the tough fold of the skin that forms
at the base and side of the nail plate and often
referred to as dead skin cells
The Eponychium is the cuticle at the base of the
nail.
