Introduction To Azure SQL Databases Family

This document provides an introduction to two courses on Azure SQL databases for beginners. The courses will cover Azure SQL databases, elastic database pools, virtual machines, and managed instances. Key topics will include managing, configuring, developing, and deploying Azure SQL databases. Prerequisites include knowledge of T-SQL and SQL Server administration. The document emphasizes that students must destroy resource groups after each video to avoid incurring costs beyond the $200 in free credits provided with new Azure accounts.

Introduction to Azure SQL databases family

Azure is Huge
What to expect from these 2 courses
As you can see, Azure is a huge platform that offers many technologies, from analytics, to development of web and
mobile services, to large data management, and database deployment.

It is the last part of the azure platform that we will cover in these next 2 SEPARATE COURSES:

Azure SQL Server for Beginners part 1 of 2

AND
Azure SQL Server for Beginners part 2 of 2

SQL server on premises administration cover four main areas:

SSMS, SSRS, SSIS, SSAS

Our focus will be on SSMS

More specially, we will cover Azure SQL database family technology as it relates to Azure SQL databases, azure
elastic database pools, azure virtual machines, and azure managed instances

At the end of these 2 separate courses, you will have a solid introductory foundation of how to manage, configure,
navigate, develop, design, and deploy azure SQL databases on this platform
How to manage these to courses

The following 2 separate azure courses are designed for the beginner in managing Azure SQL databases. It is an
introduction to Azure SQL database family technology

While there are areas of azure that relates to SQL server management, such as SQL data warehouse, our focus will
be on Azure SQL databases

While this is a beginner’s course for SQL databases on azure platform, it is NOT and beginner’s course on SQL
Server administration

Prerequisites to these 2 courses are

• Learn T-SQL
• SQL server administration part 1
• SQL server administration part 2
• SQL server administration part 3
• Or at minimum an understating of SQL administration

• I expect you to know or have an understanding of how to read T-SQL scripts, and SQL server technologies
A FEW VERY IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT AZURE

Azure requires you to create an account that allows access to their platform

You are given (if this is your first time creating an account) a free credit of $200 to play with

Once you create a SQL database, virtual machine, managed instance, or elastic database pools
you are CHARGED regardless of whether you are using the platform or not

As long as you have deployed a SQL database, you are CHARGED BY THE HOUR, EVEN IF YOU LOG OFF! (there are a few
exceptions)

To avoid getting charged, when you are not using the azure platform and staying in within the $200 credit
I will deploy either a SQL database, VM, managed instance, or an elastic pool database(s)
and then after the video has finished, I will DESTROY the environment and recreate the environment for the next video

This will keep you within the $ 200 free credit and not have you incur cost beyond $200

This will seem tedious at first, but I will have PowerShell scripts that you can execute in a PowerShell to recreate database
How to manage these to courses
This is very important!
As I mentioned, you are charged for using and creating azure database even when you are logged off

Therefore, you MUST DESTROY the resource group (as I show you) after each video. While it may seem that
incurring a few cents a day may not add up to $200 credit, using some parts of azure can cost - as we will see, a few
dollars an hour! This can eat into your credit very fast.

Don’t go beyond what I am teaching you – meaning, don’t add million of inserts for testing, this will cost you added
storage costs, when I am not teaching you to add millions of inserts

STAY WITHIN the course teaching

If you deviate from the course, and don’t follow the deletion of resource groups after each video, and you forget to
destroy the resource group and are charged for excessive use beyond the $200 credits, I WILL NOT BE HELD
RESPONSIBLE!!!

IF YOU FOLLOW THE COURSE, YOU WILL STAY WELL WITHIN THE $200 CREDIT
