Module 1 .... Importance of Environmental Protection

This document discusses the importance of environmental protection. It defines environmental protection as protecting the natural environment for both nature and humans. It outlines objectives to understand approaches, define natural environments, and gain knowledge about government and community conservation efforts. Environmental protection is influenced by environmental ethics, legislation, and education. Causes of environmental degradation include land disturbance, pollution, overpopulation, landfills, deforestation, and natural causes. The purpose of environmental protection acts is to support sustainable management and use of the environment while preventing environmental harm. Environmental protection is important because the planet is the only one we have, the environment is vital to well-being, and conservation helps replenish natural resources.

IMPORTANCE OF
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
PREPARED BY:

What is environmental protection?

- is protecting the natural

environment on individual,
organizational or governmental
levels, for the benefit of both the
natural environment and humans.
OBJECTIVES:
In this lesson, learners will be able to:

a. Understand the approaches to the environmental

protection;
b. Specify the commonly understood definitions of
natural environment;
c. Gain Knowledge about the actions of government
and in participatory
conservation.
Environmental protection is influenced by three
interwoven factors:
ENVIRONMENTAL
ETHICS EDUCATION
LEGISLATION
Environmental legislation the act or process of imparting or
the discipline
acquiring general knowledge,
is the set of laws and concerned with what developing the powers of
regulations that protect air is morally good and reasoning and judgment, and
quality, water, wildlife, bad and morally right generally of preparing oneself or
and environmental health. others intellectually for mature
and wrong. life.
CAUSES OF

ENVIRONMENTAL

DEGRADATION
• LAND DISTURBANCE

Land disturbance is any man-made

change to the land surface that
may result in soil erosion from
wind or water and the moving of
sediments into our waterways and
neighboring lands
2. POLLUTION
Pollution is the introduction of
harmful materials into the
environment.

• Air pollution
• Land Pollution
• Noise pollution
3. OVERPOPULATION
Rapid population growth puts strain on natural resources
which results in degradation of our environment. Morality
rate has gone down due to better medical facilities which
has resulted in increased lifespan. More population simple
means more demand for food, clothes and shelter. You need
more space to grow food and provide homes to millions of
people. This results in deforestation which is another factor
of environmental degradation.
4. LANDFILLS
Landfills pollutes the environment and destroy
the beauty of the city. Landfills come with the
city due the large amount of waste that gets
generated by households, industries, factories
and hospitals. Landfills pose a great risk to the
health of the environment and the people who
live there. Landfills produce foul smell when
burned and cause huge environmental
degradation.
5. DEFORESTATION
It is the cutting down of trees to make way for
more homes and industries. Rapid growth in
population and urban sprawl are two of the major
causes of deforestation. Apart from that, use of
forest land for agriculture, animal grazing, harvest
for fuel wood and lodging are some of the other
causes of deforestation. Deforestation contributes
to global decreased forest size puts carbon back
into the environment.
6. NATURAL CAUSES
Things like avalanches, quakes, tidal waves,
storms, and wildfires can totally crush
nearby animal and plant groups to the point
where they can no longer survive in those
areas. This can either come to fruition
through physical demolition as a result of an
obtrusive foreign species to the
environment.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ACT?
The purpose of the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) is to support and promote the management, protection,
enhancement and wise use of the environment, while recognizing the following:
• Preventing, mitigating and remediating environmental impacts is important in making decisions and taking
actions.
• Where there are threats of serious or irreparable harm to the ecological integrity, lack of complete certainty is
not to be a reason for postponing reasonable environmental protection measures.
• All persons are responsible, financially and otherwise, for impacts on the environment as a result of their
actions or inaction.
• Administrative, management and regulatory processes need to be adaptive, responsive, fair, effective and
timely.
WHY IS ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION SO IMPORTANT?
We humans have maneuvered ourselves into a predicament and are
struggling today with environmental problems, such as the Climate
change or Air pollution the Every day, through our personal
behavior, we are either a causative part of these problems - but we
can just as easily become a part of their solution.
• Environmental protection is so important because we only have the one planet
• The environment is vital to our well-being and every element should be
protected
• Conserve by using less energy and embracing alternative energy sources
• Help to replenish what is being taken away by giving back to the Earth
