Equipment Group III : Dust

ATEX Directive 94/9/EC
Quality Requirements:

•A Quality Module certificate (QAN) can be thought of as a

‘manufacturing license’ for specific types of products and
must be in place before any product certificates are issued.

•The QAN certificate is specific to a location and protection

concept.
ATEX Directive Documentation

• EC Declaration of Conformity (Equipment Certificate)

must accompany all equipment

• Attestation of Conformity (Component Certificate)

must accompany all components
EC
Declaration
of Conformity
Mark
• The marking is a legal requirement for products
covered by one or more of the EU New Approach Directives.
It signifies that the supplier of the product has verified that
the product complies with the requirements of the relevant
Directives.

•There are (21) Directives that require products to be

marked with the ATEX Directive 94/9/EC being one of
them.

•The ATEX Directive requires third party evaluation for

category 1 and 2 equipment before a mark can be
applied.
Mark
• In signing the European Declaration of Conformity, the
Manufacturer or their legally appointed representative in
the EU can be liable to a fine or a prison sentence if the
product is found not to comply with the requirements of all
the relevant Directives.

• There are typically three ways a product could come

under scrutiny (challenged).
 Industrial Accident Investigation
 Area Certification/Audit
 Competitor or user question validity
Technical File
• A Technical File is put together for each assembly built and
shipped from Adalet.

• A Typical Technical File will consist of reports and test data to

support each Directive and Standard used to show
conformance.

• In the event of a challenge, this Technical File must be made

available to the authority having jurisdiction within a reasonable
timeframe.

• File maintained for ten years after life expectancy.

IECEx System Objective
• The objective of the IECEx System is to facilitate
international trade in equipment and services for use in
explosive atmospheres.

• Reduced testing and certification costs to manufacturer

• Reduced time to market

• International confidence in the product assessment process

• One international database listing

IECEx system
• IECEx Certificates of Conformity are issued by approved
IECEx Certification Bodies (ExCBs).

• An IECEx Certificate of Conformity attests that a sample of

the Ex product has been independently tested and found to
comply with the Standards listed in the Certificate.

• It also attests that the manufacturing site has been audited to

verify that the manufacturer’s quality system meets IECEx
requirements.
