TOPIC
SENTENCE
AND
ITS POSITIONS
TOPIC SENTENCE
A topic sentence is a sentence that introduces a paragraph by
presenting the one topic that will be the focus of that paragraph.
A topic sentence should:

• Be specific and have a narrower focus than your thesis

statement.
• Appear in or near the first sentence of the paragraph.
• Introduce the topic of the paragraph.
Positions
of the
Topic Sentence
1. At the beginning of a
The most common placement for the topic sentence is
paragraph
at the beginning of a paragraph-usually the first
sentence.
It introduces the main idea or theme of the paragraph.
It typically appears as the first sentence and serves to
inform the reader about the content and purpose of
the paragraph.
A paragraph is like the general to a particular
structure.
Example:
EXAMPLE:
"Education plays a crucial role in shaping the
future of society. It equips individuals with the
knowledge and skills needed to succeed in an
ever-changing world. Additionally, education
fosters critical thinking, promotes social mobility,
and contributes to economic development. As
such, investing in education is essential for
building a prosperous and equitable society."
EXAMPLE:
"The Great Depression had a profound impact on
American society. Businesses collapsed,
unemployment soared, and families struggled to
make ends meet. Government intervention
became essential to stabilize the economy and
provide relief to those hardest hit by the crisis.
Despite the challenges, the Great Depression also
sparked significant social and political reforms that
reshaped the nation's economic landscape for
decades to come."
2. In the middle of a
paragraph
The least common placement for a topic sentence is in
the middle part of a paragraph. The purpose is to link
the related but different ideas.
A topic sentence in the middle of a paragraph is a
sentence that presents the main idea or central point
after some supporting details have been provided.
Examples:
• Cause and effect
• Comparison and Contrast
EXAMPLE:
The proliferation of social media platforms has revolutionized the
way people communicate and interact. With the rise of platforms
like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, individuals have
unprecedented access to information and connectivity. However,
this increased reliance on social media has also led to concerns
about its impact on mental health. Studies have shown a
correlation between excessive social media use and feelings of
loneliness, anxiety, and depression. The constant comparison to
others' curated online personas can contribute to low self-esteem
and dissatisfaction with one's own life. Additionally, the addictive
nature of social media, characterized by endless scrolling and
notifications, can lead to decreased productivity and sleep
disturbances. As society grapples with the implications of this
digital revolution, it becomes imperative to strike a balance
between the benefits and drawbacks of social media usage.
EXAMPLE:
"Climate change poses a significant threat to our planet and
future generations. Rising global temperatures, melting ice
caps, and extreme weather events are all indicators of the
profound impact of human activity on the environment.
Addressing climate change requires collective action and
innovative solutions. From transitioning to renewable energy
sources to implementing sustainable practices, there is
much that can be done to mitigate the effects of climate
change and safeguard the health of our planet."
3. At the end of a paragraph
A topic sentence at the end of a paragraph is a
sentence that presents the main idea or theme as the
concluding statement of the paragraph. It typically
appears as the final sentence and serves to summarize
the paragraph's content or to provide a concluding
thought.
Examples:
• Persuasive essay- In order to build support for a
claim, usually the arguments are given prior to the
conclusion.
EXAMPLE:
"Investing in renewable energy is crucial for mitigating the
effects of climate change and ensuring a sustainable future
for generations to come. Governments, businesses, and
individuals must recognize the urgency of transitioning to
clean energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric
power. The adoption of renewable energy technologies not
only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also creates
jobs, promotes energy independence, and protects natural
ecosystems. Therefore, we must prioritize investments in
renewable energy infrastructure and accelerate the shift
towards a cleaner, greener energy system."
EXAMPLE:
It is evident that implementing stricter gun control measures
is essential for ensuring public safety and reducing gun
violence in our communities. By enacting universal
background checks, banning assault weapons, and
implementing red flag laws, we can prevent firearms from
falling into the wrong hands and mitigate the devastating
impact of gun-related incidents. These measures are not
about infringing on the Second Amendment rights of law-
abiding citizens but rather about prioritizing the safety and
well-being of all members of society. It's time for
policymakers to take decisive action to address this pressing
issue and protect the lives of innocent individuals.

human rights, celebrates individual
differences, and enhances social cohesion,
creating a more vibrant and inclusive world
for future generations.
2. In today's rapidly changing job market,
individuals must continually update their skills to
remain competitive. With the advent of automation
and artificial intelligence, the demand for certain
job roles is evolving, while new opportunities are
emerging in fields such as data science and
cybersecurity. Therefore, lifelong learning has
become imperative for career advancement and
adaptability in the digital age. Acquiring new skills
through continuous education is essential for
staying relevant in today's dynamic workforce.
3. Education is the cornerstone of personal
development and societal progress. Access to
quality education empowers individuals to
unlock their potential, pursue their
aspirations, and contribute meaningfully to
society. Ensuring equitable access to
education for all, regardless of socioeconomic
background or geographical location, is
essential for fostering a more just and
prosperous world.
4. Climate change poses a significant threat to the planet's
ecosystems and human well-being. Human activities such as
deforestation, burning fossil fuels, and industrial emissions
have led to unprecedented levels of greenhouse gas
concentrations in the atmosphere. As a result, the Earth's
climate is rapidly warming, leading to more frequent and
severe weather events, rising sea levels, and disruptions to
ecosystems. Addressing climate change requires collective
action and innovative solutions at local, national, and global
levels. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, transitioning
to renewable energy sources, and adopting sustainable
practices, we can mitigate the impacts of climate change and
build a more resilient future for generations to come.
5. The preservation of biodiversity is essential for the
health of our planet and future generations.
Ecosystems rely on a diverse array of plant and animal
species to function effectively, providing essential
services such as pollination, air purification, and soil
fertility. Unfortunately, human activities such as
deforestation, pollution, and habitat destruction have
led to alarming rates of species extinction. Therefore,
concerted efforts are needed to protect and restore
biodiversity for the well-being of all living organisms.
Safeguarding biodiversity is crucial for maintaining
ecosystem balance and sustaining life on Earth.
6. Effective communication skills are essential for building
strong interpersonal relationships and achieving success in
various aspects of life. Whether in personal interactions,
professional settings, or public speaking engagements, the
ability to convey ideas clearly and persuasively is invaluable.
Effective communicators listen actively, express themselves
articulately, and adapt their communication style to suit the
audience and context. By honing their communication skills,
individuals can enhance their influence, foster collaboration,
and cultivate meaningful connections with others. Mastering
effective communication is key to personal and professional
growth.
7. Effective leadership is crucial for the
success of any organization. A strong leader
inspires, motivates, and guides team
members toward common goals. Through
effective communication, strategic decision-
making, and fostering a positive work
culture, leaders can drive innovation, boost
morale, and achieve sustainable growth for
their organizations.
8. Effective leadership is essential for driving positive
change and achieving collective goals. A strong leader
inspires and motivates others, fosters collaboration and
innovation, and guides individuals and organizations
toward shared objectives. Leadership is not just about
holding a position of authority; it's about serving others
and empowering them to reach their full potential. By
cultivating leadership skills such as communication,
empathy, and decision-making, individuals can become
effective agents of change in their communities and
beyond.
9. Climate change poses a significant threat to the
planet's ecosystems and human well-being. Rising
global temperatures, extreme weather events,
melting ice caps, and sea-level rise are just some
of the manifestations of climate change.
Addressing this challenge requires concerted
efforts at both individual and global levels,
including reducing carbon emissions, transitioning
to renewable energy sources, and implementing
sustainable practices.
10. The digital revolution has transformed
the way we live, work, and communicate.
Advances in technology have led to
unprecedented connectivity, efficiency, and
convenience in various aspects of our lives.
From smartphones and social media to
artificial intelligence and blockchain
technology, digital innovations continue to
reshape industries, economies, and social
interactions.
