Stéphane Grégoire, founder and artistic director of the ici d’ailleurs label, was quick to pick up on Wysteria’s music. Spotted by Matt Elliott during a concert in the Grand-Est region, the sincerity of the lyrics and the voice of this young artist from Nancy managed to captivate and impress a good number of listeners. It has to be said that Wysteria
radiates when she’s on stage, and behind her fragile, sensitive figure lies an astonishing strength.
Born into a family of artists, Wysteria is only 20 years old and already
seems perfectly at ease with her art and the codes of the music world. Her debut album, Lycoris, will be released in September 2024.
A multi-instrumentalist, Wysteria has been a hyperactive musician from an early age. She began learning the violin from the age of seven at the Conservatoire of Nancy.Curious and passionate, Wysteria went on to teach herself the piano and acoustic guitar, two instruments that are now at the heart of her creative process. Singer and composer, Wysteria juggles influences and references, and is the heiress
of a light Folk and a more modern chamber Pop, reminiscent of Joanna Newsom and Beth Gibbons.
Wysteria is naturally gifted at composing, but she is also an excellent lyricist. All in a state of weightlessness, often melancholy, sometimes
more playful («You’re Lying»), the songs that make up the album «Lyco-ris» are consistent in the themes they address.
Love and doubts «Love», the relationship with others and with what exists «Alone with people», the anguish of youth «Addiction» are all subjects often raised by Wysteria.
Equally at home in both English and French, her lyrics are also a tribute to nature and life. On this first album, all the tracks are sung in English with the exception of the magnificent ‘Jasmine’, one of the undisputed highlights, enhanced by the mixing and arranging work of sound engineer David Chalmin (Gaspard Claus, Shannon Wright, The National...). The most fundamental elements are in turn called upon: fire «Flame», rain «Rain», wind «Love» are inexhaustible sources of inspiration for Wysteria, who often succeeds in associating simple images with complex and intimate sensations and emotions. «Lycoris» is not a sugary pop album stuffed with gimmicks; Wysteria’s angelic vocal lines are always introspective though deeply authentic
