Domestic consequences of the 2024 US presidential election: the quickening

There's a lot to unpack here and none of it is particularly relevant to this thread to be honest, but if you're going to accuse people of not having an ounce of constructive advice/analysis/etc and only listening to complete frauds and then, only one sentence removed, note how you will have to intently keep listening to an actual, and utter fraud to better understand what they're going to do, well, I hope your glass house is made from Corning glass or something suitably strong.

When the fraud is president, don't you have to understand what's going to happen even more ?

Great way to miss the point. If you're not going to listen to frauds, why are you repeating talking points from actual frauds (like the Morning Joe team).

I have no illusions about the president elect. I just want to know what's happening. This isn't hard. Everybody with more than a $100 in their pocket and access went down to Mar a Lago because it was that important to get a sense of what Trump is thinking. But no, we don't need to listen to him, we don't need to hear what he's planning, and we don't need to read between the lines. Sure... I can't believe I'm hearing this.. really.

That’d be new… by all accounts they went there to tell him what they want him thinking.

I did watch a tad of that press conference. I don't have the time to filter through that much rambling (we're going to have the best....they were very horrible). Pretty much the same Trump, a bit subdued.

As for Softbank, we'll see: Trump, SoftBank CEO announce $100 billion US investment, in echo of 2016 event

The Monday announcement echoes a similar pledge Son made with then-President-elect Trump in December 2016 at Trump Tower, when Son said he would spend $50 billion and create 50,000 jobs.

While that money was eventually spent, it is unclear whether those jobs were created.

Watching an hour of Trump for "clues" is not an exercise I'd recommend to do that often. I watched all of his RNC acceptance speech this past year. All of it. Not much has changed since he made waves in the 2016 primaries. Only his normalization.

The brief amount I watched of this press conference (I found recaps instead) doesn't move that needle at all.

I have zero idea what your obsession with Morning Joe is about, if it’s projection or what, as I’ve never watched the show and no one is citing it.

People aren’t going down to Mar Lago to get a sense of what he’s thinking — maybe the poor suckers are — they’re going down there to buy him because he’s literally said from Day One: money is what matters and if you pay me, I’ll do what you want.

Not really sure why you’re acting like his character is some giant enigma. We’re a decade into this schtick and you’re asking for Cliff Notes, when the rest of the class has been following along with the readings.

In probably-a-domestic-consequence news, Disney pulled a trans storyline from an upcoming Pixar series, pulled down existing content for that storyline, and also shelved a trans-athlete episode of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. It's obviously much smaller picture stuff than things like tariffs and deportation, but IMHO this sort of stuff is meaningfully damaging because representation on TV is a great vector for normalizing acceptance of pretty much any minority status. My sympathies to everyone who is distressed by this- it sucks. File under "chilling effect." It's insidious and easy to pull off because unlike something like tariffs, it doesn't directly threatened monied interests that don't want Trump to blow up our economy and in many cases it won't require more of the GOP than to create an atmosphere of fear and let the owner class react to limit their liabilities.

Disney's always been perhaps more miss than hit at this sort of stuff, but it was nice when they were scrapping with DeSantis and we could cheer for them for a bit.

Is this a trick question? Off the top of my head, at his direction SoftBank has gotten involved in such magnificent successes like FTX, Katerra and WeWork, and he completely fucked the dog when it came to nVidia and its AI pursuits.
SoftBank even sponsors a slowpitch softball team in Guilin, Guangxi, China. They are everywhere!

Unions have had a lot of success the last year or two, especially with the support of the Biden administration.

Now they're going to find out how Trump and his pro-management donors handle unions. Trump announced a pro-labor congresswoman for Secretary of Labor but she will have to go through layers of advisors, both formal and the informal ones like Musk who are very hostile to organized labor.

Recently though, Trump voiced support for dock workers. As you may recall, the dock workers unions on the East Coast threatened to strike on the eve of the election. They won a huge pay increase but they deferred the issue of automation to January 15th.

Well that deadline is coming up fast now.

Are they going to walk out just as Trump takes office to block progress? As we learned, many other ports around the world are heavily automated, including some of the West Coast ports. One of the main reasons the East Coast ports are not is this lack of a negotiated agreement with the unions on this issue.

Well the union president is a big Trump supporter so maybe he will do everything to avoid a strike.
