African American categories

[edit]

There is some inconsistency in the naming of categories about African Americans, so I'm making the CfD to try to standardize them. Essentially, it comes down to whether it should be written "African American" or "African-American". On English Wikipedia, they have it pretty standardized: it's "African American" as a noun but "African-American" as an adjective. On Commons, it's mostly "African American" in both cases, but a few random categories use the adjective "African-American". Rather than following enwiki's lead, I propose we just make it "African American" in all cases. This requires far far fewer moves, and it seems to be the way the world is going anyway (e.g. the AP Stylebook dropped the hyphen in 2019). --IagoQnsi (talk) 18:52, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. I think the AP stylebook has made a bad choice here, but I'm probably not going to win this argument. =) -- Themightyquill (talk) 08:05, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Or rather, Category:African American women's suffrage activists to match the parent category. -- Themightyquill (talk) 09:26, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great, too, Themightyquill! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:14, 27 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This appears to have been completed. -- Themightyquill (talk) 12:44, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Category needs major cleanup. Filled with bot-miscategorized maps. -- Infrogmation 00:12, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is too much on this page to be useful!

Images need to be categorized into African American athletes, African American musicians, African American authors, African American politicians, etc. Also, many entries should be in African American History, since they are pictures of objects, not specific people.--Kenmayer (talk) 15:48, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Definition of African Americans

[edit]

Should this category be restricted to U.S. African Americans? The common, if incorrect, usage in the U.S. does not include African Americans in Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, and elsewhere. Perhaps a category African Americans (United States) should be created?--Kenmayer (talk) 16:07, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Category: African American People

[edit]

A perceptive person suggested merging this cat with cat:African American people:

{{merge|:category:African American people|the same thing. apparently the two categories were used in a way that "people" were some sort of representation (?). thats not done anywhere else. }}

This suggestion makes a lot of sense. However, let me explain why I created Category:African American people to begin with. In early November 2008, this category (African Americans) had over 800+ images, including buildings and events relating to African American history. It bordered on the unusable. If a picture had any relation to African Americans, it was thrown into this category. So I created Category:African American history for the objects of history, Category:African American authors and other categories for professions. There were a lot of random photos of people at the beach, or groups including an African American soccer player, scientist, or random dude. Some nationalities and ethnic groups in Wikimedia have categories such as Men of Germany or Native American Women. Perhaps similar categories could be used for the random shots of African American non-celebrities.

I agree that 'representative' should be dropped from the description, but I was trying to express the nature of files such as File:BlackManWithDreadlocks.jpg which seemed to illustrate African American fashion or typology. --Kenmayer (talk) 20:21, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to remove the requested merge from the page, if that's OK. --Kenmayer (talk) 18:40, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mystery Photo

[edit]

Forgive me if this is not the correct place to address my question. At some earlier version of the Wikipedia article "African Americans", the article featured a graphic of 12 famous African Americans. I have the image on my computer, and I am trying to determine the identity of one of the 12 photos. Curiously, this graphic is not on this Wikimedia page. In the graphic, there's a photo in the middle of the third row, between Malcolm X and W.E.B.Dubois --- it's a color photo, so presumably someone recent, a gentleman with glasses wearing a suit. Who is this individual?
