Request

[edit]

Sorry to be bothering, I am wondering if you could add two more images to the Tongo Tongo ambush article? I don’t have the time currently right now. I am requesting that the first image from this article https://metro.co.uk/2018/03/05/isis-video-shows-four-u-s-soldiers-shot-dead-niger-ambush-7364155/amp/ of a soldier aiming over the Toyota be added if possible to the ambush section. I also request that if possible the image of the teams broken down SUV in this article be added to the Recovery of equipment section https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2018/03/tuareg-alliance-claims-recovery-of-us-special-forces-vehicle-from-niger-ambush.php Once I have the Time, I will add images from the drone feeds in the animation video, so we can continue to get this article to good article status. Weathin (talk) 03:28, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Weathin: Hello. Thank you for your message. The second image is copyrighted by the Movement for the Salvation of Azawad so it can't be uploaded to Commons as such. You should contact them to ask if you can upload the image to commons under a CC-BY-SA license. Here is their Facebook page (in French), here their Twitter account and here is their website. You can also upload it on Wikipedia as a non-free image under fair use.
For the first image, I suppose it is a PD-USArmy and I will upload it soon.
Thanks for your work on the article. Do not hesitate to ask me if you need some French translations.--Le Petit Chat (talk) 06:29, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to be bothering but please don't change the or revert the picture in 1st Armoured Division (France). It is the same insignia as old version but with Better quality Shreejank (talk) 07:17, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Shreejank: I disagree. In particular, the repartition between white and yellow in the cross is completely different. Please read Commons:Overwriting existing files. -- Le Petit Chat (talk) 08:14, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
File:Serge Espoir Matomba's campaign bus in Yaounde, 22 September 2018.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Opération Barkhane - engineering trucks.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Benin Naval Forces has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. jdx Re: 12:56, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand about guns but, if 1897 is the year when the gun was created I suppose Spain might have had some of them in 1911. I don't know.--Chamarasca (talk) 18:41, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Chamarasca: I forgot to reply, excuse me. I suppose that that cannon is another 1897 design since I am rather sure that the French official 75 mle 1897 was not exported before 1914.--Le Petit Chat (talk) 09:54, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Magog the Ogre: What was the problem ? The author died more than 70 years ago.--Le Petit Chat (talk) 06:08, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
According to Article L123–1, L123–3, L123–4 of French law, the 70 years counts on the start of the year following death. This is the case in most if not all countries. Thus this work would not be in the public domain until January 1, 2022 at the earliest. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:17, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Salonika photos

[edit]

Thank you for your thank you. There is an expression in english: "to disappear down a rabbit hole". It is a metaphor for when you get distracted, and follow the distraction rather than continue with the original task.

My most recent distraction has been to try and to identify the modern names and locations of the villages mentioned in the <<J.M.O.>> In some cases, as a result of rural exoduses, some of those villages no longer exist. If they do not have an existing article in en.wikipedia, then I create one, and translate from the articles on bg.wikipedia and el.wikipedia

Concerning photos of Zouaves, it was my understanding that in general, they were in one of the five battalions in the two régiments de marche d'afrique. Although the 1er R.M.A. had been part of the organisation also known as 17e D.I.C. in the Dardanelles, I believe they had transferred to 156e D.I. in October 1915. Whilst it is useful when a photo is labelled as Zouaves, unfortunately I do not know of a way to determine the specific battalion, or the specific R.M.A. in which that soldier was serving. There's also the 2e bis R.M.Z. but I do not know if there were engagements where they fought alongside the two battalions of R.M.A. present in Salonika.

It is fantastic that so many great photos have survived, and that they have been shared on wikimedia commons, too. There are some great Imperial War Museum photos, but their indexing is really poor, notwithstanding their Directeur d'Informatique having previously worked at Google. You are more likely to find a great photo by accident rather than by design. The good thing about IWM photos on here is that crowdsourcers can add tagging.

OK, seems that you drew these maps only from text sources and you didn't have a base map? What are the sources for the other two maps?--Antemister (talk) 17:04, 24 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, I did not have access to a map. The map only displays some populated places since it was rather difficult to draw "lines" in the desert until the en:Moroccan wall was built. Some references about the control of the localities:

Flickr2Commons

[edit]

I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first").--A1Cafel (talk) 09:32, 12 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I knew about flick2commons and I also used it ([1]). I did not download the photographs to my computer, since I used the option of Commons:Upload Wizard to upload files from flickr to commons. That tool has a better interface.--Le Petit Chat (talk) 09:46, 12 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

PD-BNF

[edit]

blacklisted flickr account

[edit]

Hi Le Petit Chat, I noticed that you removed the flickr link that I added to the information in this file. But I would like to say that just because that flickr account uploads files that don't belong to him doesn't mean that all the files he uploads are untrustable. This is an old photo that can be found from a source other than flickr, however, the flickr page provides detailed information about this photo that cannot be found elsewhere, so the flickr linkd are essential for us to understand the photo. Thank you for understanding. 源義信 (talk) 06:31, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I understand. But I would prefer not to link anything from that account. Do as you prefer. -- Le Petit Chat (talk) 07:40, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. It is quite possible that the photo File:Maurice Pellé 1920.jpg is a family heritage, but its author is definitely not User:Garitan. The fact that the photograph is dedicated to somebody does not mean that they are copyright owners. If the user is really the copyright owner and wishes to release the rights under {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} licence, they can contact the Commons:Volunteer Response Team and prove it for them in some way. However, that is not necessary, as the photograph is so old that it can be hosted here as {{PD-anon-expired}}. For these reasons I am going to revert the information about the author and the licence back. -- Jan Kameníček (talk) 14:37, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Old photos

[edit]

In general, any photo of unknown authorship older than 70 years (so 1952 or earlier) has a theoretical possibility of being PD in a 70 pma country (either because it is actually anonymous or because the author died before 1953), so COM:DR is preferred over "no permission" in order to give people an opportunity to find more information about its authorship and copyright status. Also note that any photo of unknown authorship older than 120 years (so 1902 or earlier) from a 70 pma country is automatically assumed to be PD under {{PD-old-assumed}}. -- King of ♥ 07:02, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@King of Hearts: I understand. However, uploading other's work as own work, or as anonymous work even when the name of the photographer is printed under the image, is illegal in French law. Since the indicated cc-by-sa licence was a nonsense, I considered that these files could be speedy deleted. What can be done for such illegal mass uploads? Le Petit Chat (talk) 13:37, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what the French law is, but there is no requirement to properly attribute public domain works in the United States, and per COM:NCR we are not required to follow any law other than United States law on non-copyright issues (any requirements on using PD works are not considered copyright restrictions). -- King of ♥ 16:30, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

La photo des essais de de Guiche

[edit]

Bonjour Le Petit Chat.

https://gallica.bnf.fr/iiif/ark:/12148/ btv1b9042301g/full/full/0/native.jpg
Amicalement, Bernard de Go Mars (talk) 09:52, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ouhhh !

File:Wreck of the BNS Vigilance.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Service photographique de l'armée roumaine

[edit]

Bonjour,
