Carl Locher
[edit]Would you do me the honour of explaining the schemed plan that lies behind the filing of this painter Category:Carl Locher? Broichmore (talk) 08:58, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
- Yes of course, Broichmore, but please, let us go easy on the sarcasm.
- First, you need to know the background. In 2016, I started to organize some of the categories concerning Category:Marine paintings. They may still look a mess, but trust me, it was worse then. It was obvious that a lot of users were in the dark about the different kinds of marine paintings - or they simply did not care. So I wrote a small guideline, found at Category talk:Marine art. It also forms the basis of the scheme for Carl Locher.
- And yes, Carl Locher is one of my "pet" Danish painters. There is a small group who find and upload works by Danish artists and we try to adhere to some sort of standard for organizing the artists and their artworks. In the category:Carl Locher you would put photos of him, or a photo of his tombstone or documents related to him and portraits of him - but these can also be in a category of their own, as here. If the artist has less than five uploaded paintings, they would also go here, otherwise you make the category "paintings by xxx".
- Commons has 11 genres for paintings and marine paintings is one of those. So you make "marine paintings by xxx" and put them there. As mentioned in the guideline, marine paintings can be further subdivided - and they should. If there is a number of paintings showing just waves and no ships, you make "seascapes by xxx", if there are paintings of specific ships, you make "paintings of ships by xxx", and if there are paintings of naval battles you make "paintings of naval battles by xxx".
- So why the "oil" part? Well there has been a lot of painters who made cheap ships portraits with pen and watercolour, and the "oil" bit was introduced to seperate the oil paintings from those. It is not used throughout the whole range of marine painters and I am not fanatical about it, but some users take great care to identify oil paintings, so there it is.
- You write a lot about "diffusion". If the category system was one-dimensional with only one hierachy, I could understand you for not wanting endless levels with few items. But the Commons category system is multi-dimensional. You never know where the user starts looking, and a lot of categories/entry points is a good thing. It you are looking for "marine paintings", why should you have to know who Carl Locher is? In the present system, you do not have to know, but you will find him anyway.
- So, there it is - your comments are welcome. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 12:17, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. You just now moved File:Carl Locher - Den danske øvelseseskadre 1890.png containing identifiable ships from paintings of ships to oil paintings of ships. Why? Because its in oil.
- About 10 minutes before that there were a total 9 oil pictures of ships; 5 were in 'paintings of ships' (4 identifiable and 1 not identified); and 4 were in 'oil paintings of ships' (3 identified, and 1 unidentifiable).
- Again all these pictures are in oil.
- Regards Broichmore (talk) 13:01, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for your observations, Broichmore. Yes there is still some work to do, and hopefully there will be time for it soon. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 03:37, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
Jens Thielsen Locher
[edit]What about Category:Jens Thielsen Locher which has at least 70% of it's content put there by me, previously lost in the ether. Jens Thielsen Locher contains zero quantity images, empty, except for 1 cat, Paintings by Jens Thielsen Locher. That cat, in turn, has again zero images except for yet another 1 cat which is Category:Paintings of ships by Jens Thielsen Locher containing 14 files. Why three cats nested in such a way and only one having any content? As far as I know that does not follow policy or even any guidelines of any description. First two cats empty. Three clicks before content.
There's no need for this kind of complexity, it's as far from KISS as you can get. You yourself have said (about making cats) in the past the point is that you only create them if there is enough relevant material for them.
Take a look here: a file that wouldn’t even be on the project without me, now marked' revision 391379430 by Broichmore (talk) - autopatrol revoked - patrolled for policy violations).' I'm asking you, what policy violations? Broichmore (talk) 00:10, 9 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Broichmore. The category structure of Jens Thielsen Locher mimics that of his son, albeit on a smaller scale. The reasons are the same: The category system on Commons is multi-dimensional. Yes, when you reach him via his name, there are two empty categories. If you reached him via "Paintings from Denmark by artist", there would be only one empty, and if you reached him via "Paintings of ships by artist" there would be no empty categories. You may disagree with this sort of category structure, and as said before, you are free to discuss it in the right forums. But you are not free to change/delete it without discussion - and that is the policy violation you ask about.
- Your work finding good illustrations "in the ether" is very much appreciated. But - like the rest of us - you need to come to terms with the fact that you are part of a collaborative effort which has its own rules. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 05:46, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Paul Fischer - Udsigt fra kunstnerens altan, Sortedams Dosseringen - 1887.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. License question
[edit]Hi, I have uploaded this and a few more images from Statens Museum for Kunst which have been released under a "CC0 1.0 Universal (CC0 1.0)" license. Now they have been tagged by a but and I see that it doesn't show as a valid license tag on the page. Wpuld you be able to tell me if the license is valid and if so what I should write to make it show properly?Ramblersen2 (talk) 09:28, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Ramblersen2. Just use the template {{CC0}}, and delete the bot warning. See example in the Just Mathias Thiele file. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 09:46, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

Daily gallery updater has failed on User:Rsteen/Artists from Denmark
[edit]Hello. This message is to inform you that a daily gallery in your userspace, User:Rsteen/Artists from Denmark, has failed. Due to software limitations, the bot has a hard upper-limit of about 6000 files per day (including overflow galleries), while your gallery had 24043 files.
This usually happens because a gallery is too broad, encompassing too many subcategories. Please review the logs here and request that a subcategory be excluded, or narrow your category choice(s).

Image without license
[edit]
- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.
If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.
It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.
You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.
Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.
Thank you. This message was added automatically by MifterBot (Talk • Contribs • Owner), if you need some help about it, please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the ->Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --MifterBot (Talk • Contribs • Owner) 05:31, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
- Comment: This is what happens when you have a slow(ish) internet connection. During the upload, the process will be terminated and you will be informed (erroneously) that the servers are under maintenance etc. They are not - you were just timed out. In some cases, the image made it to the Wikimedia servers (it pops up in your "Uploads"), but the artwork or information template is not there. You then have to use the "create" option to get the image properly registered. This involves uploading a dummy image to avoid being told that you are uloading a duplicate of an existing image (!). During that process, a warning such as the one above may arrive. The bot is doing good work - there are many inexperienced users - but in this case it just adds to the irritation of having to work with a slow(ish) internet connection in (otherwise beautiful) rural Italy - hence this comment. The link resulted from the University being connected to the Danish architect Christian Hansen. New version of Harald Sund image
[edit]Hi Rsteen. I've taken the liberty of uploading a new version of your file File:Harald Sund - San Vitale Ravenna - Relief from temple of Neptune.png. I took the new one directly from the original publication. It's much sharper and shows the strokes of the original woodcut (I think it's a woodcut) more clearly. I think it's an improvement; I hope you agree. I've also revised the description slightly to provide more information, and added a link to the original source (Hutton's Ravenna) at the Internet Archive. If all this seems high-handed of me, I apologize. Feel free to revert the changes if you don't agree with them. Cheers, Choliamb (talk) 13:51, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Choliamb. Thanks for this message. Just took a look at the new version and must admit it is actually sharper, so let us keep it by all means. The book scans at archive.org differ wildly in quality and it is always a good idea to search for a better scan, for instance at hathitrust.org. By the way, good job getting hold of the original book. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 14:45, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Daily gallery updater has failed on User:Rsteen/Artists from Denmark
[edit]Hello. This message is to inform you that a daily gallery in your userspace, User:Rsteen/Artists from Denmark, has failed. Your gallery has a hard upper-limit of about 8000 files per day, while your gallery would have had 19065 files (including files already on the page).
This usually happens because a gallery is too broad, encompassing too many subcategories. Please review the logs here and request that a subcategory be excluded, or narrow your category choice(s).
Please make your request for removal at User talk:OgreBot/gallery within 4 days, or your gallery will be subject to removal.
Thank you. Magog the Ogre (via OgreBot (talk) 03:22, 15 January 2023 (UTC))
- A request for modification to the search has been added. It seems to be the category "Hans Christian Andersen Award" that explodes with links to a lot of categories.Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 04:42, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2022.
Round 2 will end at UTC.
Thanks,

Categories - we need to work closer together on this
[edit]Hi Ebbe,
I think we need to work closer on categories.
I must admit that I don't have the expertise needed to meet your wishes regarding categorisation of images from Statens Museum for Kunst.
Firstly I agree that we should try to aim high here!
There are several problems.
First of all that I've identified 127 unique categories in their database. This is something that you clearly find to be too much, for instance that you consider woodcut prints and woodcut to be the same, ie. woodcut, this has resulted in you having to fix that manually, and we clearly want to avoid that, it's a waste of time.
What I have in mind is that I start with object types that I assume are well defined, my assumption is that that would be paintings.
All in all this an exercise in mapping between SMKs object types (127) and the ones you want (maybe 20-30), this should be quite simple, but I can't do it alone.
I've also created a template along the lines of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, it is here.
Looking forward to working closely with you on this, you can send my mail on kim.bach@gmail.com or wikimail, I'm quite open about my contact information :-) da:User:Kim_Bach Kim Bach (talk) 10:08, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

Help with a Budtz Møller title
[edit]Hello, Ebbe Hove -- I plan to upload a photo of an untitled 1905 oil painting by Carl Budtz Møller, and I would be most grateful if you could suggest a title (in Danish), perhaps a brief, descriptive one suitable for the Wikimedia category "Paintings by Carl Budtz Møller" that you created. The painting depicts a kneeling male nude in a studio or at least indoors, seen from behind. Can you please make a suggestion? --Jdsteakley (talk) 01:26, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Jdsteakley. Budtz Møller mainly painted landscapes and genre works, so there is no shortage of titles for your upload. "A kneeling male model" would be Knælende mandlig model and a man seen from behind would be Rygvendt mandlig model. And thank you for participating in this wonderful project. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 06:50, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your speedy reply! --Jdsteakley (talk) 21:48, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
Marine painting cat
[edit]Hi, when I created the Template:Marinepaintingcat, I added a provision that if Category: [year] painting by genre" exists, it will sort there. If not, it will sort into Category: [year] paintings. Can I ask why you took that out?
Right now, there are many "[year] marine paintings" categories that are entirely disconnected from the "[year] paintings" parent categories, because neither "[year] paintings by genre" and "[year] paintings by subject" exist for that year. Are you planning to create those categories for all the years? It seems like a cumbersome manual task just to make all these intermediate categories for each year, unless you know of a faster way to create and populate them. Perhaps I have been doing it the hard way unnecessarily. Many thanks. MarbleGarden (talk) 21:16, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi MarbleGarden. Thank you for participating in the categorization process. It is because of users like you that Commons is not just a vast collection of random files, but a usable repository for knowledge, along with Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia branches. Yes, I changed your edit. The rationale is that I do not find conditional statements - of the kind you inserted - very useful in this context. It would be better to have a fixed structure across the different subjects, hopefully aided by templates that solidify this structure. I would rather see red links to year and decade categories than have an uneven and unpredictable structure. The red links may be fixed along the way. If you do not agree in the edit, you can start a formal discussion on the template discussion page, but at least now you know the reason for the edit. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 03:38, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
Paintings by Paul Fischer has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |
Prosfilaes (talk) 18:53, 7 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Prosfilaes. The Paul Fischer with the creator template is a German photographer, not known for paintings and drawings. The Gustav middle name for the painter was not widely used, and is really only used on Commons to distinguish him from the German. I therefore see no reason to change all these painting and drawing subcategories. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 03:37, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category
[edit]When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Graphics by Carl Locher in the Statens Museum for Kunst. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Jmabel ! talk 15:08, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, this is helpful advice. Rsteen (talk) 02:25, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!
[edit]Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Statens Museum for Kunst
Venlig hilsen Rsteen (talk) 10:33, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
Paintings in Statens Museum for Kunst
[edit]Thanks for your note in the edit summary when you reverted my change to Category:Paintings by Carl Bloch in Statens Museum for Kunst. I was trying to take care of the many duplicate categories in the parent category.
Can you point me to where the decision was made not to use the word "the"? Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 06:11, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Auntof6. Well, discussions take place in the strangest places. In this case it was done here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ham_II#"in_the_Statens_Museum_for_Kunst" I can see that we both followed along first on the "the" path, but then the man from the Museum changed his mind, and "the" was dropped. A lot of double categories have to be redirected after that ... Cheers Rsteen (talk) 06:29, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- OK, got it. It's like saying 'Rio Grande River." I'll continue working on this as I have time, but using the categories without "the". -- Auntof6 (talk) 06:52, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
