about

"a true magical gem of off-kilter folk whimsy, an album of true eccentric magnificence." (Monolith Cocktail)

"there isn’t a sense of filler or obviously subpar material across these 14 songs, certainly if your favoured style of folk music is eccentric and psychedelic."

Kitchen Cynics and Margery Daw are celebrated for their evocative and experimental folk music. Their collaborative works feature poetic lyrics rich in nature, folklore, and myth. Recorded in locations such as Aberdeen and Montrose, their music incorporates unique sounds from instruments like concertina, harmonica, and acoustic guitars. The duo’s atmospheric compositions are further enriched by natural sounds and environmental influences, creating a haunting and immersive listening experience.

Their new album, “As Those Gone Before” features a variety of tracks that tell unique stories and explore diverse themes. Side One includes “Christopher Tadpole”, a cautionary tale about cruelty to insects, and “The Four Trains That Killed Me”, which narrates the tragic fate of a traveller. “Mole Man” draws inspiration from the eccentric Fifth Duke of Portland, while “Accursed Isle” reflects the lament of a sailor on Pitcairn Island. The side concludes with a cover of Dave Evans’ “Grey Lady Morning.”

Side Two continues with “Merry Marian,” inspired by a character from William Kempe’s Morris dance, and “Toy Piano” which evokes ghostly tunes in a dusty loft. “Seagull Skull” delves into the memories of lost souls, and “Breathing” celebrates a gentle existence. The album wraps up with “Swimming Souls”, a meeting of aged water babies and sea creatures, “Sticking Out My Tongue”, a playful nursery rhyme, and “My Double”, a contemplation of duality.

The album showcases the duo’s ability to weave intricate narratives with their distinctive musical style.
