Hyphen

The official site shows that the name is not hyphenated: [1]. So shouldn't the hyphen be removed here? Martinevans123 (talk) 19:09, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

I personally have no preference and have seen it both ways. The German Wikipedia doesn't hyphenate while the French Wikipedia does. The Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia doesn't hyphenate while The World Atlas of Wine and The Oxford Companion to Wine does, etc. I don't think there is an overwhelmingly compelling argument for either side but you might as well post an WP:RM for it since a move would require an admin bit anyway since Pouilly Fumé already redirects here. Yes, I'm not sure either. These three are all hyphenated (at the moment): Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly-Loché and Pouilly-Vinzelles. But had assumed that that was because they were all place-names, whereas Fumé was not. But if French wiki has it then.... Martinevans123 (talk) 08:52, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

That is a good point regarding place names and you usually do see those villages always hyphenated. Still, I don't think there is any harm in posting an RM with a low risk of this becoming "contentious". I'm sure you're not the first reader to raise an eyebrow at seeing Pouilly-Fumé hyphenated and it probably would be helpful to have a consensus driven discussion on the topic with outside views introduced. I see that Merriam-Webster gives a hyphen, as does dictionary.com. I'd be willing to do an extensive label survey, of course, if WMF was willing to fund the purchase of the required bottles. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:56, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
