Latin Motto Translation

edit

I submit that the following be accepted as the appropriate translation: "To learn the reasons of realities." I submit as a reference the following website, from the University of Guelph's Classics department, which lists the original passage from Vergil and its translation: "Felix qui potuit rerum cognoscere causas (Happy is he who can learn the reasons of realities)". This, I would say, ought to be taken as the greater authority in the matter of the school's preferred translation. Furthermore, the word "causa" does not mean "meaning", but "cause" or "reason for". If the intent was to say "meaning", then "volo" or a variant thereunto would have been used. Also, the Latin phrase is in the plural, while the current translation is singular. Wind Your Toy Entry

edit

Should this be removed? In my five years at the U of G I have never seen or heard about this particular dance. --Stvfetterly 11:52, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

This movement is particularly done during orientation week, and is done A LOT.

August 22, 2007

-Nobody cares about the Wind Your Toy thing a month after frosh week, and almost every university has a similiar pep rally during frosh week. Get rid of this garbage and spare other Guelph graduates the stupidity of this entry. - GUELPH GRADUATE

Separate page for the University of Guelph-Humber

edit
  • The University of Guelph-Humber needs its own seperate page. It has its own campus that isn't even located in Guelph! It is an independant school with its own building right beside Humber College. Please create a separate article for it. Mista Tee001 18:22, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
    • Clearly right now there isn't enough content to create a separate article and, in my opinion, i dont really think it actually does warrent a separate article just a more considerable mention. (chubbstar) 20:11, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Serious copyvio

edit

I came across this text in this article:

The University of Guelph-Humber combines the rich academic tradition of the University of Guelph and the professional, training excellence of Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning by enabling students to earn a university honours degree and a college diploma after four years of full-time study.

Due to the blatant university boosterism, I had hunch and looked up the text on Google, and found that the bulk of the article is an almost direct copyvio. From this site:

The University of Guelph-Humber combines the rich academic tradition of the University of Guelph and the professional, training excellence of Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning by enabling students to earn a university honours degree and a college diploma after four years of full-time study.

I do not believe the article (or even the Guelph-Humber section of the article) should be deleted, because it is a useful subject (and my university!), but, in accordance with Wikipedia's Copyright problems policy, I have blanked the Guelph Humber section of the page.

Also, similar text appears in the University of Guelph-Humber article. I have added this comment, and the copyvio notice there too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gpollock (talkcontribs)

Presidents

edit

I took Glenn H. Penner off the list of presidents. I haven't heard anything about this, and the University Website still lists Alastair as the President. If it has been announced that Dr. Penner is taking over feel free to put it back, but could you post an article or something (and maybe note on the page that he has not yet taken over as president) Priester 04:06, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Is there even anything to suggest that Summerlee is leaving the President job? I can't find anything on the University site. --Gpollock 05:08, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I couldn't find anything either, and I don't know why he would leave it so soon Priester 19:16, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Organizing the Residences Section

edit

I was just wondering if it would be considered a bad idea to organize the residence section a little bit more. Included could be information on the types of room, the services each rez has (Mountain Caf and LA Pit come to mind), and perhaps a little bit on the students' general perception of each. As it stands now it seems a little bit disorganized. I'll wait a couple of days before changing it myself, to wait for feedback.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by TehJai (talkcontribs) .

Content prioritization ... "wind your toy" and thecannon.ca?

edit

Hey all, I question the sizeable chunk of real estate in this entry that are dedicated to Wind your Toy and thecannon.ca. The Ontarion and Peak have a much stronger and relevant history and context than thecannon.ca. And I've never, in my 6 years here on campus, ever heard someone exchange that bit of dialogue about winding their toy. Might as well add a huge entry on the Baby Shark song from Maritime.

Additionally, a few sections would nice to develop: notable people, notable research initiatives, student support programmes (which are outstanding, and far better than at most universities), Mills Hall vs. MacDonald Hall.

Does this page have an active editor?

Cheers, dg

I think I agree that the sections on Winding Your Toy and thecannon.ca do seem a little disproportionately large, but I think this is mostly because the page overall is too small. I think we should have a couple paragraphs about thecannon, but we should also have a couple paragraphs about The Ontarion and The Peak. As for an editor, I don't think the page really has any type of overall editor really, but if there are any changes you feel should be made, please feel free to make them. We're all editors here. --Gpollock 04:06, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Motto

edit

Doesn't 'rerum cognoscere causas' mean 'to discover the causes of things' or at least is more normally translated as meaning that? --Ebz 22:30, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Copyrighted" material

edit

The source material was being reworked and reworder. It won't cause copyright problems now. Sometimes it takes longer then expected to get through everything and should be reverted when the material is still being reworked.

A fraternity not far from campus

edit

Hey guys, I was just wondering - I see this lodge not far from Gordon Road each time I go to downtown, and it has these weird Greek letters - a secret fraternity? You got to wonder...Anyways, I think it is called Omega Tau Epsilon...check it out for yourself...we all see it...it is a for sure sounds like a secret society off campus... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.104.250.176 (talk) 14:29, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

That's the veterinary fraternity... I've been in there before. They're not a "secret society", that I know of anyways :) CoderGnome 19:19, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it's the vet frat and anyone can live there. I don't know how to sign posts, and too lazy to login. Sorry. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.248.238.170 (talk) 03:37, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Also, I believe it's Omega Tau Sigma, not Epsilon. Maybe a play on the word "oats"? 68.144.200.75 (talk) 23:46, 26 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Keeping it clean

edit

Hey guys. I have been trying to maintain this article for a while now. There is a lot of uncited information that I will continue to try to find sources for if warranted. Otherwise, it is in violation of Wikipedia's Verifiability policy and should be deleted. The article is quite choppy as well, with lots of tidbits that do not flow together in well-written prose. Some of this is contributed by users adding specific trivia about programs. This should be avoided unless someone is willing to create a new article about Guelph's programs specifically. This is an overview article that should summarize ALL aspects of the university, and be kept to a reasonable size. If you have any questions about my edits, please feel free to ask me here or on my talk page. Cheers. --Natural RX 01:47, 22 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hey. I think it looks ok now, most of the stuff is cited, what do you think? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.88.83.39 (talk) 02:48, 10 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's coming along. There are a few references that use bare URLs (currently #1, 3 & 7), and several others that should be improved upon. Use the Cite Web template as a guide. PKT(alk) 18:20, 22 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

I do not know how to add pictures, rather than that crest which is barely used outside the school. I thought this logo would be more appropriate: http://www.uoguelph.ca/info/graphicstandards/files/cornerstone/blue/UGlogo_RGBblu.gif

If it must be the crest here is a better picture : http://www.google.ca/imgres?q=university+of+guelph&um=1&hl=en&tbo=d&biw=1366&bih=667&tbm=isch&tbnid=vPe5eAjY_y7zeM:&imgrefurl=http://www.uoguelph.ca/~hlee/&docid=jp8R9Il_v2qofM&imgurl=http://www.uoguelph.ca/~hlee/UoGlogo.jpg&w=339&h=146&ei=ymHDUMm0Bcm4yQHNpIDwBw&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=186&sig=115007829822348698810&page=1&tbnh=115&tbnw=268&start=0&ndsp=19&ved=1t:429,r:15,s:0,i:192&tx=101&ty=51 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.95.50.112 (talk) 15:53, 8 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Joint Graduate Programs

edit

Hello everyone. I have tried to contact GWC2STUDENT regarding the Joint Graduate Programs section, but I haven't heard anything. I wanted to get other editor's opinion whether it is necessary to include it here, since it seems we're having a disagreement. My view is that these should not be listed as such. This is why I created List of University of Guelph academic programs, and it has been added in that form. But I recognize that it is unique, so it could be included, but in the form of prose (a few sentences)? I'd like to hear your thoughts. Thanks. --Natural RX 23:37, 26 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

The revisions that I made were adjusments in area conversions and have nothing to do with Joint Graduate Programs so I can't be of much help on this section. I don't know whether or not my brother Hendrik Jacobus, retired Fine Arts History prof of University of Guelph, has a Wiki account because he would be qualified. I am a current residence employee at UoG, and am interested in what the building cheers have been in the past. Does anyone know any? In particular, we're interested in what Johnston and Mills have used for cheers in the past. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.104.8.1 (talk) 00:54, 22 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Where did the name "Guelph" come from?

edit

The Guelphs and Ghibellines are such a famous part of history, yet it seems a little strange to choose one side over the other in our modern times. Was it somebody's name or something? 74.101.149.211 (talk) 02:32, 3 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Circumlocution

edit

So, I assume "over 94 undergraduate degrees, 48 graduate programs, and 6 associate degrees" is either promotional language or a very wordy way of saying "95 undergraduate degrees, 49 graduate programs, and 7 associate degrees. If it is the latter, feel free to update the numbers.

If anyone would like to dispute this, I suppose we could say "under 96 undergraduate degrees, 50 graduate programs, and 8 associate degrees". It makes just as much sense. - SummerPhDv2.0 17:57, 5 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
