@Drmies: I've clipped three articles on Henry Lowry from Newspapers.com that appear on page 1 of Pine Bluff Daily Graphic, January 28, 1921. —Bruce1eetalk 15:42, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Bruce1ee, that is fantastic--thank you! Can you help me some more? I see in Pickens that Lowry was written up in various local newspapers, including the Pine Bluff Daily Graphic, on December 26 and 27, 1920 (Pickens also lists the Memphis Commercial Appeal and the Arkansas Gazette). Any chance I can get you to browse around for those articles? Thanks so much! Drmies (talk) 15:49, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Drmies: Searching for "Lowry" and "Lowery" (as it appears to have been misspelt occasionally) yielded nothing in the December 26, 1920 issue of Pine Bluff Daily Graphic; Newspapers.com has no issue of the same newspaper on December 27, 1920 (was the newspaper published on that day?). Newspapers.com has no issues of The Arkansas Gazette after 1836. I can't find The Memphis Commercial Appeal or The Commercial Appeal; I searched all the Memphis newspapers for "Henry Lowry", but found nothing on Newspapers.com beyond the 1890s. Sorry I can't be of more help. —Bruce1eetalk 16:48, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Bruce1ee, you've been a great help already. My source here is this article, and I hope you can see the first page in preview even if you don't have access to JSTOR--it's in the first footnote. Now I don't know if they'd actually mention his name. Whatever you can do, I appreciate. Thanks. Drmies (talk) 20:15, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Drmies: I see the JSTOR footnote lists some of the other names Lowry is referred to the press, and I found these:

  • OK, Bruce1ee, that is excellent--thank you! In the meantime I found this, an archive of clippings that--chillingly--provides a step-by-step account of the murderers as they are moving the victim toward the place of execution. Looking for Sevir Chernetsov's offprint found in Lit. 'Social estate' Soslovie by Editor(end of pdf, name Sergei Frantsouzoff )

edit

For the Amhara people page. On page 442 source 5 of the pdf, Sevir Chernotsov's conclusions according to editor (probably Sergei Frantsouzoff) can be found in lit. social estate' soslovie by editor. I want to verify Sevir Chernotsov's central conclusion regarding Amhara people. Unfortunately i can't find a book title/number, articles anything.

Second question is, whether the PDF of this editor can be regarded as a reliable source about the conclusions of Sevir Chernotsov, if Lit. 'Social estate' Soslovie can't be found here.

Thanks, Dawit S Gondaria (talk) 21:26, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That seems to just be an explanatory footnote? The editor, rather than the author, wanted to clarify in a footnote that the term Chernetsov used was soslovie, which literally means "social estate" and that this is what the article is referring to with the phrase "ruling feudal class". This isn't a reference. Umimmak (talk) 21:46, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@@Umimmak: I though it was a reference to a literature'/offprint because of lit before social estate, and source 4 en 6 are references to Sevir Chernetsov work. Thanks for the translation. Can this pdf be regarded as a reliable source(question 2) for Sevir Chernetsov conclusion? Dawit S Gondaria (talk) 22:13, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dawit S Gondaria: I mean to me it seems like it's a reliable source insofar as it's in a scholarly journal, namely Forum for Anthropology and Culture. But if this is for an article about the Amhara, I think it might make more sense to also look at sources about the Amhara themselves, e.g., doi:10.1163/18177565-90000138 or [2], rather than an obituary of Chernetsov, since they'd be able to put his work in the context of larger scholarship? I believe WP:RSN is the venue for asking if a source is reliable if you want further guidance. Umimmak (talk) 22:38, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dawit S Gondaria: Well i have read the parts of Sevir Chernetsov regarding Amhara, this source(pdf) suggest his central conclusion is one could not decide whether the Amhara were an ethnos, a super-ethnos, or a ruling feudal class in contrast to his work. But thank you for the reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dawit S Gondaria (talkcontribs) 23:07, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ricky Martin songs reference request

edit

I'm working on Ricky Martin related articles and try to help them reach GA status. Can anyone find data about his 1990s songs chart performance in Latin America? For example, "María", "Livin' la Vida Loca" and "Te Extraño, Te Olvido, Te Amo". I'm currently using El Siglo de Torreón for "The Cup of Life", "Vuelve" and "She Bangs" chart performances in Latin America, if you can find such a similar newspapers or magazines, I would really appreciate it. Plus, if you can find "Vuelve" and "The Cup of Life" chart performance in the countries that are not mentioned in the article, I would also be very thankful. (Countries such as Argentina, Chile, Mexico and etc.)

In addition to the charts, I also need information about their music videos from newspapers and magazines. I couldn't find any reliable sources for "Vuelve" music video. For example, information about where it was filmed, who has directed the video and what is the story and the concept of the video. (The director is mentioned in the article, but the reference is not reliable.)

Unfortunately, I don't know what special magazines or newspapers or etc. should I check, but I'd be very thankful if someone can help me to find sources. As what I used for "She Bangs" and "The Cup of Life", El Siglo de Torreón issues really helped. آرمین هویدایی (talk) 13:56, 4 May 2021 (UTC) {{withdrawn}}[reply]

For Engine Company 21 (Chicago)

I'm looking for something that supports "[Approximately 1925], the department took its discrimination against black firefighters to the ultimate level. Members of Engine Company 21 were directed to switch engines and firehouses with Engine Company 19, moving from their downtown station at 1213 S.Plymouth Court to 3440 S. Rhodes."

Also for any explanation why. The above quote is from an undergrad senior thesis, the ref is the source she provides for that statement. Obv I can't use the thesis, so I've been tracking down her sources. This is a source I suspect will be easy to find in Chicago, but it's not available from Ohio interlibrary loan. It looks like there are two volumes, one for 1858-1900, the other for 1900-1925, and I assume this is in the second, but I don't know for sure.

Thanks for any help, —valereee (talk) 02:42, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Valereee: WorldCat doesn't list this book, which suggests that it's not in any library. It appears to only be available by mailorder (see these forum posts here and here). Apparently two volumes have been published and two more are on the way. —Bruce1eetalk 06:37, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
All four volumes have been published and are in Worldcat, but took some finding. The title changed with the second book. You probably want the first volume with the new title (which is the second book overall). --Worldbruce (talk) 07:04, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Worldbruce – I was searching for "... Firehouses [oneword] ..." —Bruce1eetalk 09:06, 19 February 2021 (UTC) [reply]
Ah, thanks, both! The volume's not available to me under the new title, either. I'll leave this open in case someone has access to it! —valereee (talk) 14:18, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Valereee: what is the new title?! ——Serial 14:34, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Serial Number 54129, it's above, corrected by Worldbruce I believe! It had been Firehouses, now is Fire Houses. —valereee (talk) 14:51, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the thesis that cites the book (link; see pp. 46, 46 n.96, 50), it appears to be citing the first book: that is, ... Fire Houses of the 19th Century. It's possible that the citation is incorrect (and the date is incorrectly given as 1997, rather than 1996), but the thesis jumps ahead 20 years to treat this story as the demise of Engine Company 21, and it's also possible that the 19th-century volume found it more practicable to include the entire history of Engine Company 21, rather than split it across two volumes. --Usernameunique (talk) 05:29, 13 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Valereee, looking at the libraries that have this work, at least one looks like an email might be worth it. The National Emergency Training Center is "open for business", including "processing interlibrary loans, [and] answering reference questions", according to its website (link). That link contains an email address; meanwhile, their ILL page outlines what look like pretty accessible policies, and the work in question is marked "Available" for loan (catalog entry). They also have the 1900–1925 volume for the 20th-century title (catalog entry), and it is also marked "Available" for loan. All that is to say that if I were you, I would send them an email detailing the query and ask if they might check the relevant page(s)—and if the entire 550-page volume would be useful, you might be able to follow the instructions on their ILL page to get your hands on it. --Usernameunique (talk) 05:42, 13 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Usernameunique, thank you, I'll check that! I've never tried to borrow a book outside my own library's interlibrary loan system, which covers the whole state but doesn't seem to go beyond that so these hyper-local books tend not to be available. —valereee (talk) 13:56, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've emailed them to ask why not lol...I wonder if one of the local Uni libraries would do it for me if I'm not an alum? —valereee (talk) 19:57, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Got it, Valereee. I can also try to ILL them if one of your libraries will not. It is probably more beneficial to you if yours are able to do so, however, as then you would have the entire book(s) in hand. --Usernameunique (talk) 21:21, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Seeking proper citations for 1910 U.S. Census page and 1986 California death

edit

{{Resolved}}

For Jack Orrison

I am expanding the Jack Orrison article, but need good reference citations for his birth and death dates. I went to FamilySearch.org and found data supposedly from the 1910 U.S. Census, United States Social Security Death Index, and California Death Index 1940-1947, but I can't see the actual documents to verify the information, and don't have proper citations.

The 1910 U.S. Census from Victor, Teller County, Colorado is supposed to list: Jack Huffaker Orrison, born October 12, 1909, father Peter Kemp Orrison, mother Lena Mabel Smiley (maiden name), one brother Richard Kemp Orrison.

Jack H. Orrison died in Los Angeles, California on June 3, 1986, according to both the United States Social Security Death Index, and California Death Index 1940-1947.

Does anyone have a subscription that allows access to the listed sources? If so, and if the names and dates I've written are correct, could you please be so kind as to give me the proper citations for the Census page and at least one of the Death Indexes? You can copy and paste the citations here, or on my Talk page.

Thanks, Karenthewriter (talk) 00:16, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There's 151 editors who have access to Ancestry through WP:The Wikipedia Library—which according to the Teahouse discussion probably has access to the 1910 California census.[10] Eddie891 manages the applications to that database so perhaps he can bring in someone able to help. Checked Newspapers.com and found this which confirms the info on the other two cards that he died in June 1986. The preponderance of evidence is that he did indeed die on June 3.
While I am convinced these records are all for the same person, my question would be how you know that this Jack Orrison is the actor? We cannot just assume that and I cannot access any of your sources, as they are either off-line or you didn't include links. I searched his dad and found an obit, but nothing says Peter's son was an actor. Can't find any obit for his mother. Trying to tie them together I checked military records based upon your Billboard clue. (Does the Billboard piece confirm the actor was born in Victor, Colorado? If so, then you are good.) Found his draft card at ancestry. I can e-mail it to you, but I don't see an e-mail link on your user page. It says that the Jack who enlisted in the army was Jack Huffaker Orrison and was born in Victor, Teller County, Colorado to P.K. Orrison. Again it doesn't give an occupation, so while Jack and Peter are confirmed by all this due diligence to be related, I haven't found anything that says Jack son of Peter was the actor. Sorry if that wasn't much help. I did check archive.org, as typically one can find info on movie people in the trades there. Didn't really find anything helpful, but this is a pretty good photo, which is probably eligible for fair use. SusunW (talk) 15:17, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

SusunW (talk) I am registered with Family Search, but that is not considered a reliable source, and I was told at the Teahouse to to get references from the actual sources.

I saw my Preferences had a typo in my email, so I fixed that, and hope I'm able to get emails now. I would appreciate you trying once more to send me Orrison's draft card. I own the book "The Forgotten Network", saw the photo you referenced, and considered photographing it and trying to get it into Wikimedia Commons, but was concerned about getting into trouble if it wasn't old enough.

I have circumstantial evidence that Peter Orrison's son was the actor. I found a couple of 1937 articles about Jack Orrison. They say he attended the University of Denver, worked at KOA (Denver radio station) before moving to KDKA (Pittsburgh radio station), and then on to New York City. It seems likely that a Colorado-born actor would start out working at a Denver radio station. Nowadays you can't have two actors with the same name belonging to an actor's union. I can't say for sure that was the case with the now-defunct American Federation of Radio Artists, but it seems likely that there was only one Jack Orrison, radio and TV actor, and all non-official websites have the actor being born in Victor, Colorado in 1909.

Almost all of the references I listed in the Jack Orrison article were found online with Google searches, but all had long online citations, which I don't know how to "shorten up" to look right in the reference list. I wrote my first Wikipedia article back in 2010, but I still only know how to do easy things, and I'm not good at listing online citations.

I'll come back in a day or two and sort through all the information I've been given. Thank you for all your help. Karenthewriter (talk) 00:27, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Karenthewriter, We also allow fair use of copyrighted images in some cases. Generally you can upload one photo of a deceased person if no free photos can be found. Just go here[11] and click for uploading a non-free file. (t · c) buidhe 02:11, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Karenthewriter I didn't get your ping, but came to check if you got my answer, as it is often that people misspell my name and when they correct it the notification doesn't work. The person at the teahouse who told you that primary sources are unreliable is misinformed. From a historian's perspective, there is a huge difference in general sources which have not been curated and/or edited by a third party, which may be created for promotional purposes and primary documents which are created by government officials to provide official records. Clearly the latter are created with a requirement that they be accurate and there are penalties if they are falsified. As long as you simply state what is in the record and do not draw conclusions, have done sufficient due diligence to confirm that the information is about the same person, and have established notability with secondary sources, you are fine using primary sources from Ancestry or FamilySearch in a WP article. In this case, however, you need to find a document that confirms the actor is this same person, as a circumstantial connection is insufficient. As for Google urls, this tool will shorten the link. I've sent you an e-mail. You'll need to respond so that I can send the image to you. SusunW (talk) 15:16, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Karenthewriter One other thing. Were it me, I would probably send an e-mail to J.T. Oswald Funeral Home. It is still operational see San Fernando. I would simply state that I was researching the actor Jack Orrison and had been unable to find an obituary. I'd then ask them if they could provide one or any information from their files from 3 June 1986, which might confirm that he was the actor. If they can it's a win. If they can't you spent a few minutes to ask. SusunW (talk) 16:04, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question about a Dutch journal

edit

{{resolved}} Hello,

This is probably a rookie question here, but I am trying to locate a Dutch journal, and find an article in it. The article I need is:

  • Israel, Jonathan I., “The Amsterdam Stock Exchange and the English Revolution of 1688,” Tijdschrift voor Geschiedenis, 103 (CIII, 1990), pp. 412-440.

I know that for books the first think you need to find is the OCLC. For journals, what is the first locator you guys need here?

I checked JSTOR and this journal is not part of the collections there. I am now checking Google Scholar, but am not having much luck finding the publisher of this journal or any general locator for it. Can anybody here help me with this search? This would be for the WP articles on Peter Serrarius, [[Adam Boreel], John Dury, and Henry Oldenburg. Thank you very much. warshy (¥¥) 20:58, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
