DORIS Group..[1] is a French company serving the energy industry, headquartered in Paris. Founded in 1965, the company has become a global leader in engineering for the conventional (notably upstream oil and gas), renewable (offshore wind) and emerging (hydrogen) energy markets, as well as the C02 capture sector. DORIS Group's expertise also extends to the port and aerospace industries. DORIS Group's services cover the entire lifecycle of its clients’ projects: engineering (conceptual, pre-FEED, FEED, detailed engineering, owner’s engineering, etc.), project management and advisory, technical assistance and asset management.

Group holds over a hundred world firsts in the energy sector. It employs 1000 people in 15 countries on 5 continents, including around 200 at its Paris headquarters[2].

History

1965 -1970: Birth of a pioneer in engineering for the energy industries

In 1965, DORIS Group is created under the name CG DORIS (Compagnie Générale pour les Développements Opérationnels des Richesses Sous-Marines) as a continuation of SEGANS (Société civile d'études du gaz du Nord-Sahara)[3]. In its early days, the company specialised in laying deep-water pipelines in the Mediterranean[4][5].

1971-1985: From concrete to steel structures

In 1971, DORIS shifted its focus to offshore and designed a concrete tank with an open-work belt at the waterline that acts as a breakwater (Jarlan patent)[6][7]. In 1973, the DORIS tank designed and equipped the world's first concrete oil platform for Philips Petroleum, located on the Ekofisk oil field in the North Sea[8].

In 1973, Howard Doris is established[9], a joint venture created to develop the Ekofisk Tank concept and its application to the construction of a series of platforms.

In 1974, DORIS designs the central platform for the Ninian field[10][11], the largest oil platform in the world and, at the time of its construction, the largest man-made mobile structure.

In 1980 in the United Kingdom, Howard Doris founds Offshore Design Engineering (ODE)[12][13], later to become a fully owned DORIS subsidiary. ODE provides technical advisory and engineering services to the energy industry.

In 1981, DORIS executes the design of a steel steam injection platform for Elf's Emeraude field in Congo.

1982 - First topside design for the Victoria oil field in Cameroon.

1982 – Engineers and divers at Howard Doris participate in the recovery of the Mary Rose, sunk in 1545 during the Battle of the Solent. The vessel had remained submerged for more than 400 years[14][15]. For this operation, Howard Doris provided and operated the Tog Mor floating crane which was used to recover the Mary Rose[16][17].

In 1981, DORIS installed the first autonomous drilling, production, living and storage platform (FPSO) on a pre-drilled subsea template on the Maureen field in the North Sea[18][19][20].

1986-2018: global expansion and innovation

In 1986, following a reorganisation, CG Doris is renamed DORIS Engineering (or DORIS). DORIS Engineering acquires the maritime research institute Océanide[21] and begins its international expansion.

1992: design of the first compliant tower platform without shrouds for the Baldplate oil field off the coast of Louisiana.

In 1994, DORIS designs the first iceberg-resistant concrete platform for the Hibernia oil field in Canada. Then, that year, designs the world's largest semi-submersible concrete platform for the Troll oil and gas field in the Norwegian waters of the North Sea[22][23][24].

In 1998, DORIS designs the world's first deep-water (1,350 m) riser tower system, the Hybrid Riser Tower, for the Girassol oil field off the coast of Angola[25][26].

From 2003 to 2005, subsidiary ODE delivers project management to the 60 MW Scroby Sands offshore wind farm in the UK. This scope marks the beginning of the DORIS Group’s engineering support to the international offshore wind industry. The project consists of four main contracts: onshore cable supply, onshore cable installation, offshore EPIC, onshore cable connection[27][28]

In 2006, in Nigeria, DORIS carries out front-end engineering design (FEED) for the entire Akpo oil field[29].

In 2007, DORIS designs Azurite FDPSO, the world's first floating drilling, production, storage and offloading (FDPSO) unit for the Azurite oil field in Congo, by adding a drilling unit to an FPSO-type building[30][31].

In 2008, DORIS completes acquisition of Stat Marine in France[32]. In the Republic of the Congo, design of the Djongo onshore terminal for the Moho-Bilondo oil field[33]. DORIS also carries out front-end engineering design (FEED) for the entire Shtokman gas field (Stockman Fields) in the Barents Sea[34][35].

In 2010, subsidiary ODE wins the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the category of International Trade, recognising ODE’s international growth[36].

In 2010, in Brazil, design and deployment in the Santos basin of eight replicated FPSO units, resulting in substantial reductions in CO2 emissions[37].

In 2011, DORIS delivers the design, for Ichtys LNG, of an integrated production management system (IPMS) for liquefied natural gas off the coast of Australia[38][39].

From 2011 to 2016, ODE-DORIS conducts FEED, Detail Design Engineering and Procurement of the Solan Platform topsides in the UK[40]. Solan is designed as both a Not Permanently Manned Installation (NPMI) and, optionally, a manned facility.

In 2012, in the United Kingdom, ODE completes its project management mission for the Ormonde offshore wind farm, which began in 2008[41].  At the time, the project features the largest turbines (5 MW) for full field development and the longest cable lay without a splice (42 km). ODE wins the RenewableUK Major Project Award[42] for its work on this project.

In 2012, DORIS executes the front-end engineering design (FEED) of equipment for the Timimoun gas field in Algeria and the Moho Nord oil field in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Development of the Yucal Placer gas field, some one hundred kilometres south-east of Caracas, Venezuela.

In 2012, DORIS is selected to provide project management and engineering services for the Wikinger offshore wind farm in Germany with a specific focus on the project’s turbine foundations, substation, cables, and installation[43].

In 2013, DORIS begins its support to Pemex’s Lakach deepwater gas field development in Mexico, providing owner’s engineering services.

In 2015, DORIS Group celebrates its 50th anniversary.

In 2016, ODE is selected as project management consultant and owner's engineer for the Hai Long offshore wind farm in Taiwan.

From 2018: continuation of oil and gas and expansion into renewable and new energies

In 2018, creation within the Group of the subsidiary ODE Asset Management (ODE AM)[44] to provide operational support to the UKCS energy sector.

From 2019 to 2023, DORIS delivers subsea flowline engineering and installation support to the Ichthys gas field, located off the northern coast of Western Australia. The Ichthys Offshore facilities include a floating Central Processing Facility (CPF) and a Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading unit (FPSO).

In 2019, ODE begins its support to the ERM Dolphyn Project which produces ultra-low carbon hydrogen at scale. ODE delivers feasibility, FEED and detailed design studies for the project as well as designing and engineering key aspects of the floating wind to hydrogen system, and ancillaries[45].

In 2020, ODE is selected to provide follow-on engineering for the Abershon field’s Early Production Scheme (EPS) development in Azerbaijan.

In 2020, ODE is selected as Owner’s Engineer for the pre-FEED stage of the Outer Dowsing offshore wind farm, set to become one of the largest wind farms in the UK at 1,500 MW[46].

In 2021, DORIS supports a Net Zero Emission Study for Infrastructure Victoria, undertaking engineering forecast analysis of various energy mix scenarios based on probabilistic future improvements in energy technology performance.

In 2022, the DORIS Group rebrands with a new brand identity and vision: to promote the shift towards renewable energies, and a new mission: to make conventional energies cleaner, and to make renewable and new energies possible[47]. This rebranding sees ODE, a wholly owned subsidiary of DORIS, become part of the international DORIS brand.

In 2022, DORIS forms a joint venture with MMC Oil and Gas, creating DORIS-MMC, with a long-term commitment to the Asian-Pacific region[48].

In 2022 DORIS began supporting the Gray Whale offshore wind farm[49] in South Korea, delivering two FEED contracts, one with HHI for the project’s floating units and another for the project’s full electrical and communications system.

In 2022, DORIS delivered a concept study to explore offshore hydrogen production using power delivered by a floating offshore wind farm for client Lhyfe[50].

In 2023, DORIS was awarded a 5-year framework agreement with BP for the provision of engineering services to BP’s global offshore wind portfolio[51]
