Woeful article
[edit]Very little information considering there's probably a wealth of records of the event. And...
Jim Thorpe took part in the games as a press reporter.
What on Earth does this line even mean? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.136.48.223 (talk) 12:53, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
Now it reads "Mahatma Gandhi took part in the games as a press reporter." Surely someone is joking. Also, the tug-of-war entry seems bogus. 64.118.103.121 (talk) 00:30, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
Unsourced material
[edit]The following is unsourced information:
- Only 24 members of Brazil's Olympic team of 69 competed. Brazil had been struck so hard by the Great Depression that the only way it could afford to transport its team to Los Angeles was to put it on a barge containing 25 tons of coffee to sell to ports on the way. The barge managed to sell just $24 worth of coffee, as the United States had a $1 head tax per person entering the country. The last hope of getting the whole team ashore rested on the Brazilian consulate in San Francisco, which sent out a courier with a check written out for the equivalent of US$45, but the Brazilian reis devalued so much that the check was only worth $17 by the time the courier arrived in Los Angeles, causing the check to bounce.
- The Grand Olympic Auditorium (which hosted boxing, weightlifting, and wrestling) was the largest indoor arena in the United States at the time, seating 15,300. The arena, built in the mid-1920s, was not used for the 1984 Summer Olympics; instead the Sports Arena was used for boxing and other venues were used for weightlifting and wrestling.
While this is interesting, we can't use it unless you provide a source. Also, none of this is really trivia, as trivia by its definition is "unimportant information" - it therefore shouldn't be in a trivia section but instead the information should be incorporated into the main article. - Tbsdy lives (talk) 21:30, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Recent additions
[edit]I propose toning down QuakerIlK's edit and removing biased and loaded language. So, instead of using phrases and words like "oddly enough" and "apparently", there should be a neutral note that a women's team gymnastics event was absent. On the other hand, we can also mention those events that were present for the first time (in athletics, for example. Besides, it'd be really nice if QuakerIlk's reference was accessible. @QuakerIlK: MartinYNA (talk) 22:01, 26 December 2020 (UTC)
- I agree, as it sounds slightly biased, especially the final potion, "although there were women gymnasts who traveled from very far away who participated in exhibitions at these games." In the near future we can make a revision to the portion. Command Decision (talk) 02:06, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
Change to partially inaccurate line
[edit]I believe this line under the "Highlights" section should be removed or changed due to the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics being opened by then Vice President Walter Mondale. This line could be changed to " Charles Curtis became the first and only U.S. Vice President to inaugurate a Summer Olympic Game", or another line similar to this. Also, this is my first time editing/ posting on Wikipedia, so please let me know of any changes I should make for future additions to the site. Command Decision (talk) 04:11, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- I somehow forgot to add this, but the line I am referring to is the sentence "Charles Curtis became the first and only U.S. Vice President to inaugurate the Olympic Game," found in the "Highlights" section. Command Decision (talk) 04:16, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
