[edit]The name Gerrit is possibly of Dutch origin, also Peter and Smit (without the h) are Dutch names.
Anti-Dramshop Party
[edit]I've found some things which link Smith with the creation of an "anti-dramshop party" in New York in the 1840s and 1850s (which apparently played some role in the election of proto-prohibitionist Myron Clark in 1854). Could someone else confirm if this is in fact true and add it to the article? 165.230.177.141 (talk) 21:36, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Liberty party nomination
[edit]He received the nomination only of that part of the Liberty party which was not willing to merge into the Free-soil party. AnonMoos (talk) 15:13, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Gerrit Smith
[edit]I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Gerrit Smith's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
Reference named "Tribune":
- From Owen Brown (abolitionist, born 1824): "Owen Brown". New York Daily Tribune. January 27, 1889. p. 8. Archived from the original on 2021-09-22. Retrieved 2021-09-18 – via Chronicling America (Library of Congress).

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT⚡ 06:22, 7 April 2022 (UTC)
Lack of context
[edit]This paragraph: “ Smith was a laggard instead of a leader in changing from supporting colonization to "immediatism", immediate full abolitionism. Support for Jefferson Davis after the war would have been unthinkable for Garrison, Douglass, or other abolitionist leaders.” is lacking context. Is the implication that Gerrit Smith did support Jefferson Davis? What does that have to do with “immediatism?” Can someone flesh this out? 2600:1700:EDC0:32E0:AD35:EA73:6C29:625A (talk) 19:26, 10 May 2022 (UTC)
