I've now moved the page Law Society of England and Wales and created a simple disambig page at Law Society, fell free to expand it if necessary. Maybe it should be merged with Law society? Vclaw 17:44, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
Name
[edit]This article was previously moved it seems on the basis of a Google search which brought up Law Society of England and Wales when when Law Society was typed in. The problem is, however, that the organisation is simply called The Law Society as per its Royal Charter see http://www.lawsociety.org.uk/documents/downloads/royalcharters.pdf - there is no mention of The Law Society of England and Wales. The words of England and Wales are used at the top of its website simply as disambiguation making its geographical area clear, its name, however, is still simply The Law Society. Surely the article name should reflect this (being based on the Society's charter rather than a Google search).
It should be renamed to reflect the fact that its name is The Law Society not Law Society of England and Wales, especially as the page The Law Society just redirects to this page. Jonny1047 (talk) 14:07, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
- I am not sure whether this is the correct approach after all. It is true that the Charter mentions "The Law Society" (in quotes), but it also drops the capitalised definite article in other places, e.g. "such society shall be entitled to be described as 'In alliance with the Law Society in England'" and "'The Society' means the Law Society incorporated by the Charter of 1845". Neither their website has an internal consistency. It seems that the capitalised definite article is only used in the website title as well as in places where only the name is mentioned, but in running text the article is never capitalised. Furthermore, the UK Companies House (register of companies) drops the article entirely and only mentions "Law Society", even though the definite article is used for other companies that have a definite article in their name. Note also, if you go by website title, you will also encounter "The Law Society of South Africa", "The Law Society of Northern Ireland" and so forth.
- According to MOS:THECAPS, a capitalised article should only be used as part of an official name or common usage, otherwise a lower-case article is preferred. I'd say that this is not really evident in this case. WP:THE then tells us: "If the definite or indefinite article would be capitalized in running text, then include it at the beginning of the page name. Otherwise, do not". Combine this with the fact the Law Society is, at least informally, distinguished as the Law Society of England and Wales, regardless whether that is part of the official name or not (see for instance the footer on this webpage). I'm also quite sure that other law societies are, within their jurisdiction, probably also referred to as "the Law Society" in informal usage. I am inclined to move this article back to its original title or to Law Society (England and Wales) instead.–Totie (talk) 14:55, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
- I also find plenty of secondary sources that still refer to the entity as Law Society of England and Wales, including themselves in a recent webpage, the Solicitor's Regulation Authority website, the Law Society Gazette website (link above), a recent submission by the Law Society itself, a recent court case, foreign law societies and several other sites. I think there is a good case to be made that this is a natural disambiguation.–Totie (talk) 10:15, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
