Script
Hi. I am in the process of developing a script to automatically correct common misspellings in articles. The initial goal is for users to have a button at the top of the article which will open an edit window and do a search/replace to correct common misspellings. When the script completes, it then shows the changes and allows the editor to decide if the changes were correct. The goal is to have as few falsely corrected entries, so some of the entries on WP:LCM wouldn't be added. If you are interested in trying it out, let me know. My initial prototype only has entries from the "A" page. There are probably some minor bugs in there as well, but it won't commit any changes without approval. The script is at User:Symplectic Map/spell.js and you just have to include it in your monobook.js file, e.g., User:Symplectic Map/monobook.js. If you are using something other than the standard theme, it would have to be included there instead. It should work on Firefox and Google Chrome. I haven't tested Internet Explorer. If you know of another script for doing this sort of thing, please let me know, so I don't unnecessarily waste any time. Thanks! Symplectic Map (talk) 20:57, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for your feedback. I responded on my talk page. All the best. Symplectic Map (talk) 20:19, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

I try my best but I guess I cant spell too good. :~) Aymatth2 (talk) 18:10, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry - that was obscure. Just noticed that you caught two misspellings of this word in the article on Wireless user group and the next day one more in South African wireless community networks, all of which were my fault. I am releived that the articles recieved attention by someone who does not have my difficulty with the i-before-e rule. Thanks. Aymatth2 (talk) 16:56, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing my “retreived.” I know the general rule — i before e except after c — but my brain cannot always communicate well to my typing fingers. So, without either of the auto-correct or spell-check features of my word processor, I can make almost as many typographical errors as a monkey … a dumb one at that! I have to admit that there is something about typing in the Wikipedia edit window that makes it all the more worse. Thanks again!! SpikeToronto (talk) 18:22, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Thank you (and all of the other gnomes out there) for correcting my spelling. I wish there was an integrated spelling tool in Wikipedia. BTW, do you have any idea of the appropriateness of rabbinic vs. rabbinical? I much prefer the former, as it sounds less archaic.Mzk1 (talk) 13:40, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
- Although I normally check Retreived, rhythem, rhythim, rhythym, rhytm, rythem, rythim, rythm & rythym on a daily basis, I also sift through the other "R" mis-spellings when I have time.
- There has been much talk of spellchecking, but with UK, US, Canadian, Australian, Indian, New Zealand, South African, Malaysian, Singaporean and Caribbean versions of English in use on Wikipedia, it has serious problems.
- With regard to rabbinic vs rabbinical; Wiktionary (a fairly neutral dictionary on the UK/US split compared to Oxford or Websters) suggests the former is "Related to rabbis", whereas the latter is broader "Referring to rabbis, their writings, or their work". However, I am not claiming any knowledge of the subject, its just that "rabinnical" is a common mis-spelling under "R"

Peacock language
I notice that you've edited many articles which use the work "renowned". Please remove such language rather than touch it up. It's not allowed at all. Thanks. -- Brangifer (talk) 22:12, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
- Please note, I am not using the word, just changing mis-spellings of "renouned" to "renowned". I'm a Gnome, I do things like that.
Despite your claim "It's not allowed at all" Wikipedia:Manual of Style (words to watch) opens with the statement:- "There are no forbidden words or expressions on Wikipedia, but certain expressions should be used with care"
- Sometimes other editors obviously think the word is appropriate - especially when explaining how a subject meets WP:Notability.

Thank you for fixing referred and referring in Runtime verification. As an often time gnome myself (though I have always done it anonymously before), I greatly appreciate the effort that goes into finding and repairing typos and poor grammar. I usually only do it in the articles I am actively reading for some reason; to go to random pages finding errors is amazing in my book. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.92.217.195 (talk) 23:48, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Search index not being updated
I get the feeling that only Gnomes really feel the bite of this problem. I tried the Google search, but when I asked for "prominant", it only gave me about 1,000 articles that contained "prominent". The WP special search gives me 18 articles that I fixed several days ago. I can still find other things to fix, but this inability to retrieve favorite misspellings throws off my rhythm (I used two of your favorite words!). A year or two ago, the index updater didn't run for over a week, as I remember. I hope we don't match or beat that record. Hang in there! Chris the speller (talk) 22:16, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. The "Plus operator" was new to me, and vastly improved the results. I added "-intitle:User", and that trimmed it to 52 articles. Many are articles I fixed 3 days ago, and a few were articles deleted 2 or 3 days ago. These results are pretty close to being usable, and will start to look even better if that blasted index updater doesn't get fixed in the next week or two. A few years ago I used Google heavily, although its spider at the time was about 3 months behind, on average. The Special:search page really spoiled me since then, when it was being updated. Cheers! Chris the speller (talk) 15:09, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

- It seems to be working at the moment; corrected mis-spellings have disappeared and new ones added. Having read the explanation at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#.22Updating_search_index.22_out_of_order.3F I'm not sure if some pages are still being excluded from the search, but I can at least correct some of the backlog. - I don't know almost anything about Atheism 3.0, I'm not sure my edit was much more than a spelling/typo correction. Having read the AfD discussion, the first thing you should do (if you haven't done it already) is ask for it to be restored into your userspace, as suggested in the AfD. I can then re-read it and see if I can make any suggestions.

- I never "changed" the correct spelling of "receives"...it was probably a little mistake, as in maybe the spell check didn't catch it. I don't think its enough to post on my talk page, just correct it and move on. Sue Kastle (talk) 18:02, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Unneeded spelling changes
The spelling repellant is an alternate and accepted spelling of repellent. There is no need to change it or insert the term [sic] to tell the reader that there is a mistake in the original. There is no mistake in using the alternate spelling. Binksternet (talk) 15:57, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your message - although I can't agree at all.
The word repellant appears in Wikipedia:Lists of common misspellings/R which I am currently working my way through.
If you look the word repellant up in Wiktionary, [2] you will see it states that repellant is "a Common misspelling of repellent".
I will, therefore, continue to change this mis-spelling.

Ressurection
I notice that you're going around Wikipedia articles replacing Ressurection with Resurrection. That's fine and dandy, and I'm sure that 99% of the time this is the correct spelling, however on Deathwish Inc. discography there is a band whose name is correctly spelled with two S's. untill - Only one L, please
Any other words I run across as I see them.
becomed -> became (as I see them Results 1–20 of 340,602 for becomed)

Vaneeesa Blaylock protected page
Hi, you listed the page or parts of the page to be protected; could you offer me some advice on how to get this lifted? I have placed a request on the articles talk page, is this all I need to do? Im new to wikipedia and couldnt find the answer in the help pages. If the content that you protected was due to permission to use the content how do I need to prove to you or admin that I have permission from the artist in question to use any available material? Many thanks for any and all help in advance :)--BRobinson111 (talk) 21:07, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
- Errr - I'm confused. Vaneeesa Blaylock does not appear to be a protected article, and according to the history, it never has been protected. All I did was change 9 misspellings of retrived to retrieved.
- I'm an inclusionist, who believes that we should include detailed information on Wikipedia, provided it can be verified as true. Others may find your description too detailed. I hope you have not just copied the information straight from Vaneeesa Blaylock's website, or another source, as that would be a copyright infringement. She cannot give you permission, she must give Wikipedia permission, as you are not the publisher, but Wikipedia is. You are, however allowed to include short quotes, as you appear to have done.
- I know nothing about Vaneeesa Blaylock, but a quick flick through the article:-
- You should read WP:DATESNO which rules out the st in 1st or rd in 23rd etc.
- After the initial Vaneeesa Blaylock, she should be referred to as Blaylock, not Vaneeesa
- Avoid terms like "to present" no-one reading the article knows when you wrote it, so no-one knows when the "present" is
- Avoid listing every work Blaylock has produced see WP:NOTDIR tell us where we can see of her work
- Hope this helps - Arjayay (talk) 21:35, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
Yea that helps a lot, Ill get those things sorted; thankyou very much.--BRobinson111 (talk) 21:40, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

- I'm not possessive about "R" - I'm more than happy to share the burden.
The trouble is the search facility is forever having problems, which creates a number of backlogs and errors in the list.
Then you go through a word in the list and find the mispellings seem to have been corrected - which is fine - but have they all been done? or has the editor got bored after the first 5 or 6 and left the rest of the mistakes?
After 13 weekly iterations only 4 words have occurred every week:- “Recieve”, “Refered”, “Refrence” and “Retreived”, with "Recieve" way out in front. However 103 words in the Wikipedia:Lists of common misspellings/R have yet to have a mispelling in 13 weeks.

Garbo and Pabst
hello there.. Just wondering why you deleted "renowned" director Papst. (I see the typo in the misspelling of "renown." There's no point in just saying "directed by Pabst" since he's listed as such in the director's column. So the reason for renowned is that it was unusual for such an inexperienced actor to have leading roles in pictures by two of Europe's most acclaimed directors, Stiller and Pabst. St. James General Store stories
I noticed you removed some paragraphs added to St. James General Store, claiming they were unsourced. Actually those stories can be found in the external link to the article. Personally, since they were swiped directly from the link they should've been rewritten in order to avoid copyvios. -------User:DanTD (talk) 19:41, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for your message. I found the article when searching for uses of "renouned", a common misspelling of "renowned"; but the use of "renowned" is contrary to WP:PEACOCK so needs deleting/rewording. I then noticed phrases like "the most fun story", which do not belong in an encyclopedia and that there was no reference cited in the text (the reader is not expected to search the external links). I then found your comment on copyvio in the history, so, faced with a range of problems, I chose to delete it as "unsourced". I assume from what you are saying that more of the text is a copyvio and will check later today. Arjayay (talk) 08:04, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Created "Rhythm (respell)" for WP:Respell
- This section repeated from wp:PUMPTECH. -Wikid77 14:05, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
After the discussions, I created page "Rhythm (respell)". I think the respell plan seems workable, and we can refer to those pages as wp:Respell pages (or "repages"); plus, in the case of the misspelling "Rythm" (91 matches) then the redirect to new page "Rhythm (respell)" has allowed a sublink to the 1990s rock band "Rythm Syndicate" (purposely misspelled). This approach solves several problems:
- it allows multi-spelling disambiguation (where articles with 2 spellings can be listed, "Rhythm" and "Rythm")
- broadens Wikipedia's ability to catch respelled words, similar to a dictionary website listing close matches
- reduces redirects which have made articles seem to contain the misspelled words
- clearly notifies the reader when a "misspelling" rather than an alternate British variant spelling or such.
- reinforces the notion to correctly spell the word, otherwise will get the respell page (no longer is a misspelling "close 'nuf for Wikipedia").
- reduces the need for redirects of every misspelled form, as a consequence of noting the wrong spelling as "misspelled".
- catches all related redirects by Special:WhatLinksHere, rather than separate, scattered redirects to different articles.
Although this issue began as a method to reduce redirects for misspellings, also note that the wp:Respell pages could be used to handle some slang or archaic spellings (such as "olde") in cases where the archaic spelling might have no associated article. Meanwhile, redirects for special terms would still be unchanged, such as "Micorsoft Vista" could be "Microsoft Vista" with no repage. However, by avoiding numerous future redirect titles with "~rythm~", then when a desperate user re-types just "rythm" → hey mystery solved, as the page explains there is a spelling error, offers some related pages, and shows search-links which can quickly inform readers whether Wikipedia has pages about their correctly spelled topic. Admittedly, these issues require some deeper thought to sort out the various advantages, as being "multi-spelled disambiguation" pages, but the more they are used, then the clearer, and easier the system will seem. Online dictionary users are well aware how a search for "repealt" might list: "No exact match, try: repeal, repeat, repealed, or repell" etc. For years, Wikipedia has had a systemic bias that article titles should only allow a choice (disambiguation) when using identical words, not choose among similar spellings. -Wikid77 (talk) 14:05, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for always looking out for my spell errors. Just wondering, but why do you always end up at articles I created? --TheShadowCrow (talk) 21:40, 21 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your appreciation.
You ask "why do you always end up at articles I created?" - It's just that you keep using words beginning with R.
As explained above, I have adopted the Wikipedia:Lists of common misspellings/R. So, to keep me away, just avoid words beginning with R ;-) - Arjayay (talk) 09:37, 22 March 2013 (UTC)- Also, on the Eduard Hambardzumyan and David Ayrapetyan articles, you are correnting a refernece's spelling from "Rusian" to "Russian", but that is how the actual source spells it. --TheShadowCrow (talk) 02:35, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing that out, I usually check the original, but I obviously missed these. The question is what to do about it?
WP:COPYEDIT allows the correction of "trivial spelling and typographic errors" in quotations, but is silent about correcting references.
Personally, I think the incorrect spelling should be kept, as it will help the reference to be found by storage software, such as the "Wayback machine", if the link is broken in the future.
However, I also think it should be noted as a misspelling by the addition of (sic) otherwise Wikipedia looks sloppy, and/or other editors will come along and change it.
Any opinions? - Arjayay (talk) 12:53, 31 March 2013 (UTC)- As you may have noted. I have added (sic) to acknowlege the misspelling - Arjayay (talk) 17:26, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Adrianus Johannes lemmens
Hello Arjayay, I wanted to thank you for helping with the spelling on the page of Adrianus Johannes Lemmens. Great help and many thanks ! Glemmens1940 (talk) 13:04, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Old newspapers
Arjayay, do you not have a library card? I note you are in East Anglia so you should be able to access the British Library's online newspapers with a library card. Name is as spelled in the paper quoted, I'm careful over not modernising spellings in these cases. Mjroots (talk) 17:37, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks - as we know, the standardisation of spelling is relatively recent - as you obviously had access to the cited source, I just wanted to be sure it wasn't an accidental typo. Arjayay (talk) 18:53, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, Wikignome, but Shock Horror :)
Thanks for your Wikignomic contribution to an article on which I was working. But When I Went Looking For Your User Page To Thank You I Was SHOCKED And HORRIFIED to espy the following description of one of your likes: More Capital Letters Than Wikipedia Approves Of, for this made it quite clear that nobody had told you that a preposition is something not to end a sentence with. And that is something up with which I am often told I should not put :) It also seemed mildly unexpected in a Wikignome, though this doubtless just proves the foolishness of my prejudices in such matters :) Anyway, thanks for all the good work, and please keep it up :) Tlhslobus (talk) 15:13, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
- You are, of course, quite correct.
- It is a great failing of mine, but I'm not (quite) that pedantic.
- Misspellings and "real" grammar errors - yes, but I just can't get worked up about certain grammar rules, such as prepositions at the end of sentences and/or split infinitives - and this is not due to a misplaced loyalty to Star Trek - I can't stand the programme (cue the trashing of my pages by enraged Trekkies).
- Grammar changes over the years and I'm sure some rules, such as the split infinitive, are almost dead. Other parts of grammar, such as the serial comma, or whether a collective noun is singular or plural, engender lengthy, fruitless discussions.
- Similarly I don't see the point in spending hours changing one short horizontal line for another - be it a hyphen, a minus sign, a em-dash or an en-dash - and god-forbid that anyone should ever confuse them, or use them in the wrong place. IMHO there are enough major problems to be tidied up before worrying about this - but if it brings enjoyment to others - well, at least it is the privacy of their own home.
- Enjoy - Arjayay (talk) 15:55, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks - I've just changed a couple of dates as WP:DATEFORMAT and translated "comerciant". Wiktionary translates this as 1.dealer, tradesman, trader, shopkeeper 2.businessman - I chose businessman as it covers the other meanings.
You might find en.wiktionary useful as it translates words from many different languages into English - you don't even have to know which language the word you want translating is in.
Best wishes Arjayay (talk) 11:03, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
Broadcasted
Hi Arjayjay. With regard to this edit, in case you weren't aware, "broadcasted" is acceptable as the past tense of "broadcast" - see http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/broadcasted (I used to change it to "broadcast" too until someone made me aware). Regards DH85868993 (talk) 01:16, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
- As the Wiktionary definition states, the use is proscribed. The word also appears on Wikipedia:Lists_of_common_misspellings/B and the first page of a search for broadcasted comprises almost entirely of redirects from Broadcasted to Broadcast. Arjayay (talk) 12:45, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Recent Edit on KZPT
Hello,
I saw that you changed the word "broadcasted" to "broadcast". If you look, that word is in the "History" section, which means it was in the past. Broadcasted is the past tense form of Broadcast. For now, I am reverting your edit, but if you can tell me why you changed it, that would be helpful! Thanks! Corkythehornetfan (Talk) 22:42, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
- The full explanation is at the top of this page.
Briefly, broadcasted is not universally accepted and WP:COMMONALITY requires us "to find words that are common to all varieties of English." - Arjayay (talk) 08:36, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! /that makes sense now. Corkythehornetfan 12:55, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
Your reverting me on The Archers today
Good reasoning here (above)
though I still find it ungrammatical to my old Welsh ears
so I have rewritten it to read thus: ... whose slot in the schedules it eventually took: the first edition aired on Monday, 2 April 1951.
All the best! — | Gareth Griffith-Jones |The WelshBuzzard| — 10:52, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
- (I then suggested on G G-J's page that "episode" was better than "edition")
- To mine too. The word edition was already there(!) I have made the revision. — | Gareth Griffith-Jones |The WelshBuzzard| — 11:30, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks and Question
Thanks. A belated thank you for the Metanoia (theology) spelling correction. Question. I concur with your distaste for most tags. E.g., Theodicy and the Bible is tagged as a “a personal reflection or opinion essay” with no example, so I am at a loss what the tagger means. What do you think? Vejlefjord (talk) 20:29, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- I don't know enough about the subject to know whether the article represents all views on the matter, or those selected by/preferred by you as the principal editor.
The history shows you created the article with a vast (40kB) edit, made a few minor edits, and then left the article alone. User:ReformedArsenal then made several removals and edited the references, since when there have been a few other minor edits, but fundamentally, the current article is largely as you started it. The essay-like comment may refer to the use of X's view, and Y's opinion, rather than facts, but in a subject which is largely opinion, this is inevitable.
If you disagree with the tag you could ask the tagger User:StAnselm why he tagged it, but as that was in June 2012 he is unlikely to remember - although (as you noted on my user page), I think taggers should explain the reasons on the talk page, so other editors can understand, and try to address, their concerns.
Alternatively, you can simply remove the tag following the Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, leaving it to others to start a discussion, if they so wish. If you do remove the tag, I would include the unclear reason for the tag being added, and the lack of comment on the talk page, in the edit summary Arjayay (talk) 13:52, 24 November 2013 (UTC)- Thanks for the ping. The article hasn't changed much since June 2012, and it still looks like an essay. It reads just like a college paper, actually. Now, it's a discursive essay rather than personal opinion, and so maybe the tag is inappropriate. But it still needs re-writing. StAnselm (talk) 21:05, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Arjayjay, I believe we have spoken before now. I just wanted to say thanks for mending my edits where I can't spell restaurant! Don't ask why I can't do it, although I know how to spell it my fingers seem to type in the wrong thing! Thanks again, MrDerails (talk) 17:42, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
