Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Overzealous deletion attempt of Foloosi

Hello Creffett,

Today morning I created a page Foloosi which you have marked for deletion. I would like to inform you that I'm not associated with the company in any way nor I've been paid by the company to do it. Being a startup enthusiast, my purpose of creating the page is to acknowledge the companies working in the fintech sector of the UAE and MENA regions. The company for which I've created the page has been listed under top 20 fintech list of Forbes in the UAE.[1]

Without knowing much about the company or doing prior research, you've made an attempt to get the page deleted, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Foloosi. It is clearly an attempt of Wikipedia:Overzealous deletion.

Everybody's opinion matter, like you said it is not a notable company, but being listed under Forbes' list of 20 Fintechs in the Middle East, makes it notable as well as a valuable company for the MENA startup ecosystem. On top of that, imagine creating a page for PayPal or Stripe, and somebody comes imposing his/her opinion and mark it for deletion, it is not ethical at all.

Afterall, it is my 4-hour hard work. After this, I'll be stepping forward to create a page on Careem Pay, the fintech arm of MENA's unicorn Careem, now owned by Uber.

I hereby request you to remove the deletion request and let others contribute to it.

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by IamHaseeb (talkcontribs)

IamHaseeb, based on your editing patterns, I find it difficult to believe that you're neither being compensated nor affiliated with the company in some way. I will not end the deletion discussion (and in fact I cannot now that there has been at least one good-faith deletion vote); it is now in the hands of the community to discuss whether the article should stay or not. creffpublic a creffett franchise (talk to the boss) 16:31, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

Joe Kelliher Draft Page

Hello Creffet,

Please forgive me in advance if I get any of this wrong, I am new to this. I hope I have posted this message in the correct place. Again, apologies if not.

I wrote a page for Joe Kelliher that was originally marked for speedy deletion for unambiguous advertising. I then redrafted it - as it is now - and submitted for review. Or, at least I thought I had, but it has stayed in the ether for quite some time.

I'd be incredibly grateful if you could look at the new draft and provide your thoughts, or send me where I need to go. The page is:

Draft:Joe Kelliher

Many thanks for any response in advance.

Best wishes, Drewwotherspoon1076 (talk) 13:39, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Drewwotherspoon1076, I've taken a look. First, you need to submit it for review in order for anyone to look at it - I've done that for you. However, you're going to need to find much better sourcing to establish notability. We need significant coverage in independent, reliable sources. Just based on the information provided, I would say that there are two major possible claims to notability, "lifetime president of Kelliher Insurance Group" and his wrestling career. In order to establish notability, you'll want to find significant independent coverage about him in either of those roles - perhaps newspapers covering his performance in a wrestling championship or a business magazine's profile of his career (make sure it's independent! Not something by one of the businesses he worked with or an interview). creffett (talk) 23:50, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Yet another impressed "thank you"

Hey Creffett,

why are you not an administrator yet? Please fix this single issue I've ever noticed with your edits one day.

~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:02, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

ToBeFree, if you're serious...I'd be willing to think about it. creffett (talk) 00:08, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
I didn't do a thorough analysis, and as a newbie to the group myself, I won't be a nominator yet – but I found WP:RRN to be a very good source of information. 😊 ~ ToBeFree (talk) 00:17, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

User:: Saucer Tennis

There appears to be a conflict of interest in your request to delete the historical data regarding the creation and copyright protected subject Saucer Tennis. It is not a promotional page as it does not call for any action positive or negative from the user. Instead it is the historical benchmarks in the history of the Disc Sport, Saucer Tennis. The conflict of interest is a refusal to add a legitimate historical fact to the Flying Disc Sports Article page and the action to remove the material entirely from the wiki site. It is also not a web hosting violation as it offers specific historical data regarding the sport Saucer Tennis. A historical fact that can be verified through the link to the Library of Congress website database that provides the date Saucer Tennis gained copyright authority. The material was added purely for historical benefit of wikipedia users with an interest in the history of disc sport. The user page Saucer Tennis should not have been deleted due to the facts presented. I would request a conflict resolution of this matter. Regards Saucer Tennis --14:03, 12 March 2020 (UTC)Saucer Tennis (talk)

Saucer Tennis, I invite you to review the policy that defines conflict of interest - requesting deletion of a page doesn't mean that I have a COI. Now, if you want to create a Wikipedia page about your sport, you'll need to provide significant coverage in independent, reliable sources in order to show notability. The fact that the book was registered for copyright or is indexed by the Library of Congress does not establish notability. If you want to argue the deletion, you may contact the deleting administrator. creffett (talk) 14:35, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Notability would include Television, radio and print as well as other data. Your conflict arises through your interest in removal of the Saucer Tennis addition to the Flying Disc sport page then the action against the User Saucer Tennis page. A sport played by disc sport enthusiast that is a part of history of disc sports is the definition of notable. I was under the impression that your claim against the page was it was promotional, or are you now taking another position for the Speedy Deletion reasoning? Also is it your position that you are the determinate Wikipedia authority of what is notable? --Saucer Tennis (talk) 14:56, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Draft space move for (Today News African)

You see something of being a REVIEWER is a very good rights/permission, but as REVIEWER, you can I identity a (short description of article) which does not need some of (AFC/AFD). A tag like (Inline citation needed/citation needed/more citation needed) is more advisable, which can even give more chances to changes that implies to make. So putting (AFC) and (moving to draft space) doesn't bothered, but this is a Short Description of a newspaper/news Web, even without the tagging of (Short description of newspaper) in it. So I don't see a reason of moving this to (draft space) and (AFC), it is your decisions on how to handle the article. Much regards. (F5pillar 20:38, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

F5pillar, as the message I left on your talk page states, we need significant coverage in independent, reliable sources. The article as written has none of that, and in fact it is sufficiently under-sourced that it could probably have been speedily deleted. The external links don't establish notability; there's one page which links to an article and then a bunch of links to profiles of one of the authors. I would suggest asking for help at the Teahouse for help with finding good sources to show notability, then use that advice to improve the article and re-submit it. creffett (talk) 00:22, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

Moved page and Undisclosed payment

@Creffet

Dear Creffet, I was creating a page of Chase Duddy and I saw It was already moved to draft:chaseduddy I saw the content was plagiarized with poor citation and there is undisclosed payment tag. I made a better version of this draft if you could remove that tag so I can upload the draft and submit it for review.

Best regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emily045 (talkcontribs) 17:51, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Emily045, since the last person to write a page on him was an undisclosed paid editor, I feel obligated to ask: are you being paid to write about or do you otherwise have a WP:COIconflict of interest with regard to Chase Duddy? creffett (talk) 18:08, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

@Creffet none of them, I am just a fan of Xylo band and Chase, Duddy's are very popular and notable people So, I thought I should create a Duddy page. my request is that you should look into the draft that I created for chase and your expert opinion will help me a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emily045 (talkcontribs) 18:44, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Emily045, you can create the page in your sandbox (User:Emily045/sandbox). creffett (talk) 20:53, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Why did you delete my section?

My page is a legitimate legendary recording studio. The “music” section with the list of artists who have recorded at the studio are correct. If you would have looked at the reference of the Discogs link you would see this to be true. Please advise. Chuckalkazian (talk) 02:14, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Chuckalkazian, a list of artists associated with a studio is not notable unless covered in reliable sources. Discogs, as a crowdsourced project, does not establish notability and is not reliable. Further, the page is not "your" page, and since you have a clear conflict of interest, you should not edit it directly any further and instead should request edits on the talk page. creffett (talk) 02:46, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Ibilola Amao moved to draftspace

The Ibilola Amao has about 4 reliable sources that establish notability and are independent of the subject. Please kindly revert. Timmylegend (talk) 19:04, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Timmylegend, interviews are not independent sources. Numbering the sources according to the current state of the article, I count precisely two independent sources, and one of those is at best questionably reliable:
  1. An interview with the subject - not independent.
  2. Another interview with the subject - not independent.
  3. Yet another interview with the subject - not independent.
  4. Entirely written by the subject - not independent.
  5. Finally, something not directly connected to the subject. Independent, though it doesn't really establish notability since it's just saying that she was selected to be mentored in a program.
  6. Repeat of source 1.
  7. Repeat of source 4.
  8. Appears to be independent of the subject, but it's explicitly an advertorial/sponsored content, so it's not particularly useful in establishing notability.
I think this woman is potentially notable, which is why I haven't nominated the article for deletion, but it needs independent and reliable sources to establish that before it's ready for mainspace. You can use the non-independent sources to establish facts (where she went to school, members she's an organization of, etc.), but you need the independent sources to establish notability. creffett (talk) 20:36, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Please Help me Recover article on Whale Cloud

Dear Creffett,

How can I recover article on Whale Cloud which was deleted just now? There's no information available on Wikipedia about this company so I tried writing this article from various news resources. I think it was well written but I respect your decision. Kindly allow me to improve it. Thanks. Virtuista (talk) 21:01, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Virtuista, you'll need to ask the deleting administrator (Jimfbleak) for a copy. That said, the article was written with a very promotional/press-release tone, so unless you make significant changes to it, re-posting it will likely result in it being deleted again. creffett (talk) 21:07, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, that's helpful information from an admin. Now that I have your feedback I will review the article and hopefully, would be able to improve it as per wikipedia's standards and guidelines. Virtuista (talk) 22:31, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Voxa Page Recovery

Dear Creffett,

Can I recover the page I wrote on Voxa which was deleted a few days ago? If you could also clear up why the page was deleted and how I can fix it that would be amazing. I wrote this article from resources on the company that I found on the internet and thought I could compile them into a Wikipedia page. This is my first time publishing on Wikipedia and I might have gotten the tone wrong, please help! Thank you so much.Sachin_Zachariah (talk) 16:41, 26 March 2020 (PST)

Sachin_Zachariah, I can't recover the page, as I'm not an admin. I tagged it for deletion because it was blatantly promotional. I see you've already posted on MER-C's page asking to get the page back, that's all I can suggest that you do. creffett (talk) 14:47, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
I see. Thank you. Do you have tips on how to properly get the tone and structure for Wikipedia? I'm a high school student and a lot of the writing I do is similar to this in that it's stretched out and verbose. I'm starting to understand that that's the opposite of the tone needed for Wikipedia. Sachin Zachariah (talk) 16:49, 27 March 2020 (UTC)

The Signpost: 29 March 2020

I removed your CSD from that page as the page creator looks to be making good faith efforts to improve the article after it was placed. The article was still declined though, but it doesn't look to be promotional to the point of G11 anymore though. Cheers Sulfurboy (talk) 20:30, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Sulfurboy, thanks for the heads-up. I'm suspicious that the author might be undisclosed COI (particularly given their use of "we"), but no objections to you removing the tag. creffett (talk) 20:47, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Creffett, I see that now, I've tagged the page with a paid editing tag and asked the user on their talk page for proper disclosure. Thanks Sulfurboy (talk) 20:49, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
