'estimated at about ... '

[edit]

Hi! You've removed several instances of 'estimated at about' from text that I've written. In each case I believe you were wrong to do so. In this case my text read "... estimated at about 3.4 million ...". The actual estimate given in the source is 3394791, but that is ridiculously over-precise, so I have rounded it to 3400000 – and made clear that I've done so by prefixing that number with 'about'. Do you have a suggestion as to how this could be improved or handled better? Or would you perhaps stop making edits of this kind in cases where the figure in the article is an approximation to the actual number given in the source? Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:12, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Justlettersandnumbers — thanks for your note. The concept of approximation or rough calculation is implied within the term "estimated," so "about," "around," "approximately," "roughly," etc. are not needed as qualifiers. These phrases are included in WP:AWB's list, in the "remove redundant words" (WP:TERSE) section. I understand the figures you have included are rounded from more precise numbers within sources, though "estimated at" covers both 3394791 and 3.4 million, e.g., as approximations/rough calculations. "Calculated around" or "quantified around" could use these qualifies, as they imply more precision, but "estimated at around" and "estimated at" in these instances act synonymously. Thanks — Picantho (talk) 23:10, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Stromness Lifeboat Station

Thanks for your contribution to Stromness Lifeboat Station.

I just wanted to point out that using the expression 'Lives were lost' is a regular and expected term to be used in Shipping disasters, is not a Euphamism, and is perfectly acceptable. MartinOjsyork (talk) 18:13, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In Flag of Georgia (U.S. state), you linked to Rachel Lance. This doesn't sound like the right person to me. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 03:11, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bubba73. Though it is a different topic from her typical area of focus, the media section of Rachel Lance's website does list: Time Magazine, July 2020. Mississippi Is Replacing Its State Flag, But a Confederate Emblem Still Flies Over Georgia. Picantho (talk) 03:15, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for clearing that up (so quickly). Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 03:25, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hi Picantho! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Thank you. Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 20:18, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
