How do I insert footnotes and references?

How do I hyperlink names to other Wikipedia entries?

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Telegirl7 (talkcontribs) 00:33, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

For references, there is a cite tool at the top of the source editor. Liks are done by [[Target Article]] which will display as Target Article, or, if you want the displayed text to differ from the link, [[Name of Target Article|Target Article]], which will also display as Target Article. In the visual editor (which I find much easier for references), you simply highlight text and click the link button or click where you want the referrence and click cite. EBSCO access

[edit]

Hello. I'd like to ask whether I can get my EBSCO access removed. Based on what I've been told, EBSCO access is temporary and lasts for only one year. Since I applied for access as long ago as 25 January, 2017 (visible here), I would have expected my EBSCO access to have expired already by this stage, but it just seems to continue endlessly. It has been fun using EBSCO, and I may apply for access again at some time in the future, but I really don't want it at the moment. FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 03:52, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Person's article

[edit]

Hello, I am trying to make an article about Lars Faeste, Global Client Chair and Senior Partner of Boston Consulting Group, on his behalf. Every time I edit, it disappears without being published.

would you please suggest the best way to do that? I need a similar page as this one : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maelle_Gavet

Is there a way you can help creating one?

Best regards, Ana — Preceding unsigned comment added by AnvinoBCG (talkcontribs) 08:12, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ana. You don't appear to have made any previous edits under the user name AnvinoBCG. Do you have another account? You also appear to have a WP:Conflict of interest, and maybe paid editing which needs to be declared. I suggest that you create your article as a draft (Draft:Lars Faeste), and ensure that you find independent WP:Reliable sources in which Lars Faeste has been written about at length, then summarise the information in these, and use them as references. Google doesn't find reliable sources for me, so I'm not convinced that he is notable in the special Wikipedia sense, but perhaps you can find some newspaper articles? Don't forget to click on "Publish changes" at the bottom of your draft so that it gets saved. I can find no record of a previous article, though the advice on your talk page indicates that there has been something last week. Dbfirs 08:46, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Your previous draft which you had tried to create at your user talk page was deleted for 2 reasons: G11 and G12, the latter as a copyright violation from https://www.bcg.com/de-de/about/people/experts/lars-faeste.aspx. You were told in a message some days ago on your user talk page that copyrighted text is not allowed in Wikipedia, and yet your new draft is again a copyright violation from the same source, so will again be deleted. Before you try to create another article, please read the advice at WP:Your first article, as well as the advice above and the advice on your user talk page. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:46, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hello, AnvinoBCG. Please understand that editing Wikipedia "on behalf of" anybody or anything other than Wikipedia itself, is fundamentally contrary to the purposes of Wikipedia. If at any time Wikipedia has an article about Faeste, it will not be "for" him, it will not belong to him, he and his associates will have no control over its contents and will be discouraged from editing it directly, and it should be almost entirely based on what people who have no connection with him have chosen to publish about him in reliable-edited sources. --ColinFine (talk) 10:47, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Archieve not readable

[edit]

Hi! I just want to know some of the background of the game I am playing 'Choice:stories you play'. But when I got to the main page, the titles are there but when I click them, nothing happens! It's been like this for a while now. Can I please know the problem? Thank you for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.50.208.170 (talk) 11:32, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Is this a question about how to read or edit Wikipedia? If so please provide a link to the page you are having a problem with. If you are referring to a 'bug' of some sort in the video game our reference desk may be able to help or more likely a help or contact option within the game itself. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 11:59, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Choices: Stories You Play is a game by Pixelberry Studios. I suggest IP gets in touch with the developers at their official website, it is not a problem the Help Desk can deal with. Sam Sailor 14:50, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
My toilet's blocked!!! I did a massive dump and it won't flush. Can somebody pleez fix it for me??? Thanx. nagualdesign 01:41, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I lost my remote control again. Any ideas? nagualdesign 01:42, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know the reason for posting here but many people find a Wikipedia article about an organization and think we are the website of that organization. {{Astray}} was made for this. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:34, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So, you're no longer full of it?[FBDB]Sam Sailor 09:12, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Plenty more where that came from. nagualdesign 15:03, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Henri Deterding's wife named as Catherina Neubronner is incorrect. Her name was Catherine Newbronner born in England. Her brother was a well known British architect in Penang Malaysia (Malaya) at the time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by John Smith89694 (talkcontribs) 15:12, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a source for "Catherine Newbronner"? According to Paul Hendrix (2002). Sir Henri Deterding and Royal Dutch-Shell: Changing Control of World Oil, 1900-1940. Bristol Academic. pp. 32–. ISBN 978-0-9513762-8-7. In 1894 Deterding had married Catharina Neubronner; she was a strong-willed woman who probably resembled his own mother. If so, this may explain why it became such ... and several other sources, her name was Catharina Neubronner. Sam Sailor 15:24, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My Page Swami Sri Vedanta Desikan

[edit]

Hi,

Recently I created a page called Swami Sri Vedanta Desikan. I created this page because there was page by name "Vedanta desika". The pronunciation and spelling of the page title is wrong and I am unable to correct it. Since I could not change it, I had to create a new page with correct name. This is very important and we cannot spell the name wrongly as it has meaning to it. I copied unknowingly and unintentionally the page content to newly create page "Swami Sri Vedanta Desikan". I saw message from wikipedia that it is wrong to copy and needs to be deleted. Hence I wrote different content for my new page and it is still showing under speedy deletion. Please guide me if I have to delete this completely and create a fresh page with the same content (as it is now in DRAFT). However, I want the page title to be retained if I have to create new page separately (Stating all again). Please advise and guide. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vijayasarathyr (talkcontribs) 15:14, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:Swami Sri Vedanta Desikan has been tagged for speedy deletion again as a copyright infringement. Interestingly the text did state "Swami Desika was born in 1268 AD". If despite this you still believe there is a case to be made for renaming Vedanta Desika to Vedanta Desikan, please start a discussion on Talk:Vedanta Desika. Sam Sailor 15:31, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
To add a few links to the above advice: see here for how to request a page be moved, and here for why honorific titles should not be included in article titles (which is the case of "Swami"). TigraanClick here to contact me 15:34, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Vijayasarathyr: As you know, we already have an article Vedanta Desika. If you believe that name is wrong, the correct procedure is to move it to the correct name; or if you can't move it because you don't yet have that right, to ask someone else to move it. Wikipedia policy is to use the name by which the subject is usually known in English-language sources, omitting any honorifics such as "sri" and "swami". If you want to change the spelling from "Desika" to "Desikan", you'll need to justify that by finding sources that use that spelling. Maproom (talk) 15:38, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How can I experiment with edit filters?

[edit]

I would like to find a page or other place on Wikipedia where I can experiment with making edits that would trigger edit filters (and in some cases add tags to the edit history) that would normally apply to new or unregistered users. Is this possible? Thanks, ««« SOME GADGET GEEK »»» (talk) 15:44, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Surely there are legitimate reasons though - maybe not to actually attempt a filter-triggering edit, but at least to test whether an edit would trigger the filter; for instance bot maintainers trying to debug something. I understand that if a new account pops out of nowhere and starts poking, one can suspect nefarious intent, but the OP here has been around for a long time and should be somewhat trustworthy.
The low-tech solution is of course to create a WP:VALIDALT for the purpose of testing, but if poking the filter is discouraged, that should not be done. TigraanClick here to contact me 17:40, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Some Gadget Geek: You could of course test these off-wiki, such as at The Test Wiki? Note, this isn't a WMF project - TNT 23:43, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error references duplicate key

If you are having difficulty with a reference error message, please provide a link to the article concerned; it does not appear that there are any edits from the IP address shown, between now and last September. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 17:20, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any chance the Daily Mail ban will be revisited?

[edit]

Some of their stories are substantive [1] 161.185.160.21 (talk) 18:43, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Probably not any time soon, no. Some of their stories may be just fine, but if they're unreliable enough that we need to use other sources in order to tell which of their stories can be depended on and which cannot, then we probably should just be using those other sources rather than the Daily Mail. GMGtalk 18:49, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
To reinforce what GMG said, I doubt that there's anything in the Daily Mail about this subject that isn't available elsewhere and better written to boot. Using Google News to search "west ham united racism" produces over 196,000 results, so it's not like the Daily Mail is a leader in covering this subject. The WP:DAILYMAIL standard is very unlikely to be revisited simply because they are unnecessary in documenting almost every topic they cover. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 19:52, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
As I said at the time of the RfC, the Mails sports coverage is actually very good (award-winning in fact) but we can't let that detract from the fact that, simply, this is a media source that makes "news" stories up. Black Kite (talk) 23:42, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page Subpages

[edit]

What is with WP:Main Page/1, WP:Main Page/2, WP:Main Page/3, WP:Main Page/4, and WP:Main Page/5? I noticed they all have the same content! Are they just backups, or is there another reason for them? qwerty6811 :-) (talk) 19:42, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Qwerty6811: There seems to be an FAQ about this: Wikipedia:FAQ/Main Page#Why are there so many backups of the Main Page? -- John of Reading (talk) 19:52, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) The FAQ box at the top of this page is your friend. Basically, they make it much harder for a rogue admin to cause any significant disruption, as each one of them provides WP:Cascade protection to everything transcluded on it, so any admin trying to unprotect the main page would need also to unprotect all of these (and others that aren't so obvious) before the unprotection would have any effect. ‑ Iridescent 19:53, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks everyone! qwerty6811 :-) (talk) 19:55, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

{{Campaignbox}} displacing thumb media, fix?

[edit]

On the page 1958 Lebanon crisis, {{Campaignbox Lebanon}} is displacing the images from the location where they should be. This is especially noticeable on a wide screen. What can be done in this situation? Uglemat (talk) 21:05, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The problem seems to stem from the flow logic of browser technology. If it was possible to group the {{Infobox military conflict}} and {{Campaignbox Lebanon}} templates into a single HTML entity, the problem would be solved. This does not require any visual compromise. It would be like a {{Multiple issues}} template for infobox-esque things at the top-right of the page. Does this exist? Uglemat (talk) 22:16, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This very short template works: <div style="float: right;">{{{1|}}}</div>. What am I missing? Am I the first person to have this problem? Uglemat (talk) 22:54, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed with {{stack}}.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 00:17, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
