[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *stigati, from *stiťi (“to attain, catch up with”) + *-ati, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *stéigtei, from Proto-Indo-European *stéygʰeti (“to be walking/climbing”), from *steygʰ- (“to go, climb”). Cognate with Czech stíhat.
