Inherited from Proto-Slavic *vъtorъ, from Proto-Indo-European *wi-tero- (more apart), from *wi (asunder) + comparative suffix *-teros. Cognate with Ukrainian вівто́рок (vivtórok), Belarusian аўторак (aŭtórak), Bulgarian втори (vtori), Czech úterý, Polish wtóry, Upper Sorbian wutora, German wieder, English wither, maybe ancient Greek δεύτερος (deúteros).
