[edit]From Old Church Slavonic копелъ (kopelŭ, “illegitimate child, boy”). Cognate with Serbo-Croatian ко̏пиле (“bastard”), Romanian copil (“boy”), and Albanian kopil(e) and kopilj (“youngster”).
