Etymology

From *neme / *nämä "what", from Proto-Turkic *nē- (what). -me is an interrogative formant. Doublet of нәмә (nəmə).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (nemä, something);[1] Kyrgyz неме (neme, something), Kyrgyz эмне (emne, what?), Turkmen näme (what?), Uzbek nima, Uyghur نېمە (nëme), نىمە (nime, what?), Khakas ниме (nime, what?), Shor небе (thing), etc.
