Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *prǫgavъ. Morphologically equivalent to Bulgarian пру́жа се (prúža se, to convulse), пъ́ргам (pǎ́rgam, to hop off, to spring) (dialectal) +‎ -ав (-av). Cognate with Macedonian пргав (prgav) and further related to Russian прыгу́чий (prygúčij, jumping far away).
