[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- أَفْوَاه (ʔafwāh)
Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Ge'ez አፈው (ʾäfäw, “scent, fragrance”), pl. አፈዋት (ʾäfäwat), if not from Old South Arabian. But also with parallels in Cushitic. The singular فُوه (fūh) is back-formed and possibly invented by medieval dictionary authors to place the word under a “root”. Doublet of فَوْعَة (fawʕa), فَوْح (fawḥ), فَوْخ (fawḵ).
